Ethereum Ecosystem Grew in 2025 Even as ETH Price Lagged: Everstake

Everstake, a crypto staking provider, said in a new report that 2025 was a “year of sharp contrasts” for Ethereum, filled with major network upgrades and rising institutional adoption even as the price of ETH remained relatively flat.

In its Ethereum Staking Insights & Protocol Analysis report, Everstake said total value staked reached about 36.08 million ETH, or roughly 29.3% of supply, with net growth of more than 1.8 million ETH. As of Tuesday, Jan. 27, about 36.5 million ETH is staked – roughly 30.26% of supply, according to Coinbase data.

The report also highlighted continued growth in network activity, with Ethereum Layer 1 (L1) transactions rising about 30% over the year to around 1.5-1.6 million per day, while Layer 2 throughput surpassed roughly 300-330 transactions per second (TPS).

The findings underscore that Ethereum has continued to scale and attract larger players despite ETH’s underperformance. Currently, Ethereum’s total value locked (TVL) stands at nearly $72 billion, while Ether is changing hands at $2,930, up 4% on the day, but down 10% over the year.

Everstake said the Layer 1 is increasingly being used as a settlement layer, while most day-to-day activity has shifted to Layer 2. The findings pointed to protocol upgrades, including Pectra, which introduced EIP-7251 to raise the maximum effective validator balance from 32 ETH to 2,048 ETH, allowing large stakers to consolidate validators.

Harvard cuts bitcoin exposure by 20%, adds new ether position

Harvard University’s $56.9 billion endowment made its first foray into ether $ETH$1,967.96 last quarter, even as it scaled back its exposure to bitcoin $BTC$68,422.73.

According to an SEC filing, the Harvard Management Company (HMC) bought almost 3.9 million shares of BlackRock's iShares Ethereum Trust (ETHA), valued at around $86.8 million.

The company also reduced its stake in the iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) by 21%, selling roughly 1.5 million shares. The bitcoin exchange-traded fund remains Harvard’s largest publicly disclosed holding at $265.8 million.

The shift comes after the price of bitcoin dropped from an all-time high of around $125,000 in October to close the quarter just below $90,000.

The move, however, may have less to do with sentiment and more to do with market dynamics, according to Andy Constan, founder and chief investment officer at Damped Spring Advisors.

The sale could reflect the unwinding of a trade that meant to capitalize on bitcoin treasury companies trading at premiums to the value of their $BTC holdings, as measured by the multiple of net asset value, or mNAV, which compares enterprise value to bitcoin value.

When bitcoin’s price was booming, digital asset treasury (DAT) firms like Strategy (MSTR) traded at high premiums to the value of the bitcoin in their treasuries. MSTR, for example, at one point traded near 2.9 mNAV, meaning investors buying the shares were paying around $2.9 to own $1 of $BTC.

That premium reflects not only the underlying cash-generating business, but also the company’s potential to keep accumulating bitcoin. Still, various investors bet on that mNAV gap narrowing. They held bitcoin indirectly through IBIT and shorted the shares of Strategy and similar digital asset treasury (DAT) companies.

With February now half way through, Bitcoin is on the verge of printing an unfavourable entry in its history book. This is the first year in Bitcoin’s history where both January and February so far are in the red. In order for Bitcoin to avoid this scenario, a monthly close above $78.6K.


However, with momentum turning toward the downside over the past four weeks, the growing likelihood of this pattern breaking is raising serious questions about whether this is a regime shift or just a temporary anomaly.

Q1 has so far been unforgiving for the largest and oldest crypto asset. From the start of the year to today, price has fallen roughly -22%, marking the weakest start to a year since 2018. February in particular has carried the bulk of the drawdown, with Bitcoin down 12.75% for the month. This makes it the third-largest February decline in Bitcoin’s history. The picture looks bleak on the surface as this adds to the idea that something is structurally broken in Bitcoin’s price action.

However, zooming into seasonality trends alone misses the bigger picture. Throughout Bitcoin’s history, sharp drawdowns of over -75% post all time highs are common. Currently, even though sentiment might’ve reached an all time low and on-chain flashing signs of pain, Bitcoin sits at around a 45% correction. The important question here becomes what forces are driving the current sell off and whether this correction still fits within the range of typical post $ATH corrections, both in terms of cycle duration and on-chain behaviour.
