Italy’s largest bank more than doubles crypto holdings to $235M in Q1: Report
Intesa Sanpaolo, Italy’s largest bank, more than doubled its crypto exposure in the first quarter of 2026, with holdings climbing from approximately $100 million at the end of 2025 to around $235 million as of March 31.

The growth was driven by expanded Bitcoin positions, with the bank adding to positions in both the ARK 21Shares BTC ETF and BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF. It also entered Ethereum for the first time through BlackRock’s iShares Staked Ethereum Trust, and picked up a fresh stake in Ripple’s XRP via the Grayscale XRP Trust ETF, worth approximately $26 million, according to a report by local crypto outlet Criptovaluta.it.

Intesa also opened a new position in iShares Bitcoin Trust call options, its first derivatives play in the space. The bank previously confirmed to Criptovaluta.it that its crypto positions are held for proprietary trading purposes, though it has not disclosed whether any of the assets are also used to hedge products offered to professional clients, the report said.On the other hand, the bank reduced its Solana holdings, which had featured prominently in the prior quarter. Its position in the Bitwise Solana Staking ETF slashed from 266,320 shares to just 2,817, a near-total exit.

Ripple's Schwartz Donates XRP to John Deaton

Ripple veteran David Schwartz has provided financial support for the US Senate campaign of prominent XRP backer John Deaton, who played an instrumental role in the company's successful legal battle with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Of course, the donation was made directly with the token.

The contribution came after Deaton took to social media to solicit grassroots funding. Deaton has stressed that he relies on small-dollar donors, distancing himself from traditional fundraising methods.

"Unlike career politicians, I don’t take PAC money. I don’t take lobbyist money. I don’t answer to special interests," Deaton stated on X.

He noted that his campaign is supported by ordinary people who give $25 to $100 at a time to "defeat 53 years of politics as usual."

A stinging defeat
This is, of course, far from being Deaton's first foray into politics. During his previous run, he unsuccessfully tried to challenge none other than Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren in 2024. Warren is widely known as one of the staunchest cryptocurrency naysayers.

Deaton continues to leverage his massive following within the digital asset, and he is currently in the middle of another campaign.

Growing importance of crypto in politics
Candidates like Deaton are trying to eschew corporate PAC money.

However, the broader cryptocurrency industry is doing the exact opposite with enormous institutional spending.

Japan's SBI Securities, Rakuten Securities plan to offer crypto investment trusts



Two major Japanese securities firms plan to introduce cryptocurrency investment trusts once the Financial Services Agency finalizes the regulatory framework for such products, Nikkei Asia reported.

SBI Securities, the online brokerage business and investment banking unit of SBI Group, one of Japan’s largest financial companies and Rakuten Securities, the online broker subsidiary of Japan’s Rakuten Group internet conglomerate, will offer investment vehicles that allow customers to access crypto through their existing accounts. Bitcoin has one level left before macro pressure opens the path to $75k as Treasury yields extend two-day correction

Bitcoin has moved from a failed push above $82,000 to a test of the $78,000 support zone, as rising US Treasury yields and inflation fears continue to pressure risk assets.

Bitcoin touched $77,711 intraday before recovering to near $78,225, spending a second consecutive session under macro stress as US Treasury yields held near multi-month highs.

The 10-year yield reached 4.599%, while the 30-year climbed 11.8 basis points to 5.131%, its highest level since May 2025. BTC is down 3.9% from its May 15 opening above $81,000, with the same move pulling stocks and bonds lower alongside it.

The $77,700-$78,000 zone, already the next support shelf when BTC failed below $82,000, now carries the full weight of that macro test.

As a non-yielding asset, BTC now competes directly with a Treasury complex paying 4.5%-5.1%, and a rate floor at those levels raises the opportunity cost of holding it.

K33 data put Bitcoin's 30-day correlation with Nasdaq futures above 0.7, and BTC's beta to equity drawdowns tends to rise when Nasdaq sells hard.

Both channels are active in the current sell-off, and the macro backdrop leaves the Fed little room to ease either. April CPI accelerated to 3.8% year over year, up from 3.3% in March, while core CPI held at 2.8% and the energy index climbed 17.9% over the prior 12 months.

WTI settled at $105.42 on May 15, up 4.2% on the day and 11.33% over the month, while Brent reached $109.26, up 3.35%.

Trading Economics models Brent at $111.28 by quarter-end, and HSBC lifted its 2026 Brent forecast to $95 while modeling $110 average Brent if a supply deal arrives only toward late summer.

Over the years, the reasons for institutional investors staking digital assets have changed.

A few years ago, investors viewed digital assets mainly as speculative instruments. This led smart money to avoid them due to their high volatility.

However, blockchain use cases have expanded from tokenization and cross-border payments to staking. As a result, institutions have started accumulating utility-driven assets, with Solana standing out due to its fast and low-cost network.

More importantly, its stablecoin flows have strengthened. According to DeFiLlama, the total stablecoin supply on the network has jumped over 6% this week alone.

However, the key takeaway is that while USDT and USDC remain in the red, newer stablecoins are driving most of the inflows on Solana.

Take Ethena’s $USDe stablecoin, for example.

Data from DeFiLlama shows $USDe is up over 1,300% on Solana [$SOL] over the past month. This reflects rapid adoption of yield-bearing and synthetic dollar assets within the ecosystem.

Additionally, $USDe trading volume has doubled to around $300 million overnight, indicating increased liquidity rotation into newer stablecoin instruments rather than legacy issuers.

From an on-chain perspective, this shift gives Solana an advantage in attracting institutional capital. However, its Total Value Locked (TVL) has dropped below $6 billion, returning to levels last seen in October 2024.

This suggests that while stablecoin activity is growing, users are holding less capital within DeFi protocols and rotating liquidity more frequently instead of keeping it locked.

This raises a key question: Are institutions currently more focused on price action than DeFi fundamentals, and could this setup increase the risk of a Q2 correction?
