1. What Is Bio Protocol?

Bio Protocol (BIO) is a financing, coordination, and commercialization protocol for Decentralized Science (DeSci), helping scientists, patients, research communities, and funders collectively support early-stage biotech research. Its ecosystem connects research communities (BioDAO), intellectual property (IP), on-chain financing, and AI research agents, aiming to shorten the cycle from discovery and fundraising to the development of scientific projects.

 2. How Does Bio Protocol Work?

Research communities can organize capital, talent, and data through BioDAO, using the protocol's Launchpad or Ignition Sales to fund research initiatives. Community members determine which projects enter the ecosystem via the curation mechanism, and research outcomes can be further governed and collaborated on through forms such as IP tokens. Bio V2 introduced BioXP, BIO staking, and BioAgents. Users accumulate points by participating in research, providing liquidity, or completing ecosystem tasks, while BioAgents assist with scientific discovery, data analysis, and the dissemination of research findings.

3. Who Founded Bio Protocol?

Bio Protocol was created by Paul Kohlhaas and a team of decentralized science infrastructure builders. Kohlhaas serves as the founder and CEO, and core members have previously contributed to building scientific IP infrastructure and the longevity research community. In 2024, the project secured an undisclosed amount of strategic investment. In September 2025, the project completed a $6.9 million financing round led by Maelstrom Fund, with participation from multiple crypto and biotech investment firms, aimed at developing an AI-native DeSci platform. Early Genesis auctions functioned as community token fundraising initiatives.

 4. Bio Protocol Tokenomics

The initial supply of BIO is 3.32 billion tokens, with an official allocation of: Community 56%, Early Supporters 13.6%, Core Contributors 21.2%, Advisors 4.2%, and Molecule 5%. BIO is used for protocol governance, project curation, the issuance of scientific research projects, ecosystem incentives, and liquidity support. Staking BIO grants veBIO governance rights and participation in the BioXP system. BIO does not have a permanently fixed maximum supply; new supply can only be introduced through formal processes such as migrating to an alternative token under governance frameworks.

5. Timeline of Key Milestones

2024: Launched the Bio Protocol Genesis community auction and expanded the BioDAO network.

H1 2025: Bio V1 went live; BIO governance, curation, and ecosystem incentive mechanism rolled out progressively.

July-August 2025: Introduced Bio V2, Ignition Sales, BioXP staking, and BioAgents.
