Holders of the USDT stablecoin from Russia risk having their assets frozen, according to PSB Bank Chairman Petr Fradkov. Tether Limited, the issuer, has the capability to freeze tokens at its discretion to comply with sanctions and combat crime, with recent cases affecting entities in Iran and Russia. Legal experts confirm the practice, noting that Tether uses AML tagging to trace wallet connections. Even a small percentage of funds linked to blacklisted addresses can lead to a wallet's complete freeze, a process users cannot prevent. While Tether aims not to undermine trust, the scale of freezes is growing. The company can also freeze and subsequently "burn" stolen tokens, re-issuing them to victims. Experts clarify that the risk primarily applies to individuals or companies directly under U.S. or European sanctions. Ordinary Russian citizens using USDT for private purposes on compliant exchanges face no issues. This follows Tether's action in March 2023 to freeze wallets on the sanctioned Russian exchange Garantex, reportedly locking over 2.5 billion rubles in assets.
