GRAM Introduction

I. Project Introduction:

1. What Is GRAM? $GRAM is the native coin of The Open Network (TON) mainnet, formerly known as Toncoin (TON). TON is an open-source Layer 1 blockchain designed for mass-scale adoption, originally architected by the Telegram team and subsequently developed by the open-source community and the TON Foundation. It connects to use cases including the Telegram wallet, Mini Apps, the creator economy, advertising, and digital collectibles. $GRAM is used to pay for transactions, smart contracts, data storage, and network communication fees, and also for validator staking, network security, and ecosystem payments. In June 2026, the TON community passed an on-chain vote to rename the native coin from Toncoin (TON) to Gram (GRAM). This change affects only the name, symbol, and branding; the blockchain retains the name The Open Network. User balances, wallet addresses, smart contracts, NFTs, staking positions, and DeFi positions remain unchanged, and no conversion, claiming, or migration is required. $GRAM fully inherits the on-chain assets and history of the original Toncoin. 2. How Does GRAM Work? $GRAM operates across TON's network consensus, transaction fees, and application settlement. The core mechanisms are as follows: (1) PoS Validation: TON uses Proof-of-Stake with Catchain 2.0 (Simplex) consensus. Validators stake GRAM to participate in block production and confirmation, can vote on network configuration proposals, and earn validation rewards; violations or failure to fulfill duties may result in slashing. Ordinary token holders can participate in staking through liquid staking services or third-party providers. (2) Dynamic Sharding Architecture: TON consists of a Masterchain, a Basechain, and Shardchains that can split or merge dynamically. The Masterchain records global configuration, system contracts, and validator information; the Basechain hosts primary accounts and applications. As network load increases, shards split to process transactions in parallel and merge when load decreases, enhancing scalability. (3) Asynchronous Smart Contracts: TON smart contracts run on the TON Virtual Machine (TVM), with accounts and contracts interacting via asynchronous messages. Fees for storage, computation, message forwarding, operations, and external message imports are all paid in GRAM. (4) Ecosystem Application Settlement: GRAM can be used for transfers, smart contract calls, and validator staking, and also serves as the payment and settlement asset for applications such as TON DNS, TON Storage, TON Proxy, DeFi, gaming, and digital collectibles. (5) Telegram Ecosystem Integration: TON connects to Telegram users through TON Connect, wallets, and Mini Apps, with GRAM fulfilling gas, asset transfer, and application settlement functions in the associated on-chain contexts. 3. Who Founded GRAM? TON's original protocol was designed under the leadership of Telegram co-founder Nikolai Durov, who authored the TON whitepaper and introduced the multi-workchain, dynamic sharding, and TON Virtual Machine architectures; the Telegram team led by Pavel Durov was responsible for the project's early development and ecosystem vision. In 2020, Telegram ended its direct involvement in the original TON project due to U.S. regulatory and court proceedings, and the Gram tokens corresponding to the early fundraise were never officially issued. Developers including Anatoliy Makosov and Kirill Emelianenko, along with the open-source community, subsequently continued to maintain the network and drove the formation of the TON Foundation. The current project is supported by the TON Foundation (a non-profit registered in Switzerland), TON Core, and global contributors, with Telegram serving as a key ecosystem partner in advancing related applications. The current $GRAM originates from the community-operated The Open Network mainnet and is clearly distinct in issuance history from the original Gram tokens under Telegram's early fundraise, which were ultimately never issued. 4. GRAM Tokenomics $GRAM is the native coin of the TON mainnet, with a minimum unit of nanoGRAM; 1 GRAM equals 1,000,000,000 nanoGRAM. GRAM-mapped assets on other chains are cross-chain representations; the mainnet native coin itself does not require issuance via Jetton or ERC-20 contracts. The original TON whitepaper set an initial supply of 5 billion tokens. Validator rewards increase the supply, while slashing and burns may reduce it, so the supply is dynamic with no fixed maximum cap. As of August 17, 2026, CoinMarketCap shows a total supply of approximately 5.23 billion tokens and a circulating supply of approximately 2.76 billion tokens. $GRAM is used to pay for transactions, smart contracts, on-chain storage, and network communication fees, and also for staking, validation rewards, application payments, and ecosystem settlement. The team does not currently provide a centralized disclosure of a fixed-ratio unlock schedule broken down by team, investors, and ecosystem funds; the Gram tokens corresponding to Telegram's early private placement were never issued, and that fundraise does not constitute a component of the current GRAM token allocation. 5. Timeline of Key Milestones 2017–2018: The Telegram team initiates TON development; Nikolai Durov publishes the whitepaper, with the native coin initially named Gram. May 2020: Telegram ends its direct involvement in the original TON project; the Gram tokens from the early fundraise are never issued; the open-source community subsequently continues the network. 2021: The community continues operating the network under the name The Open Network, with the native coin adopting the Toncoin (TON) name; the TON Foundation gradually becomes the primary supporting organization. September 2022: HTX lists TON spot trading; the current GRAM continuously inherits the trading history of that asset. September 2023: Telegram and the TON Foundation expand their collaboration; TON becomes an important component of Telegram's Web3 infrastructure. January 2025: The partnership is expanded into an exclusive arrangement; Telegram Mini Apps that integrate blockchain functionality use TON as their blockchain infrastructure. June 1–8, 2026: The renaming proposal receives 81.22% approval; on June 15, 2026, Toncoin (TON) is officially renamed Gram (GRAM). HTX simultaneously updates the trading ticker and confirms no token swap is required; existing balances, addresses, and on-chain positions remain valid.
