Flash loan attacks in DeFi have shifted towards protocol logic vulnerabilities, leading to 55% of all losses by 2024

Flash loan attacks exploiting DeFi protocol logic errors caused 55% of all flash loan losses from February 2022 to July 2024, marking a significant increase from a 28% share in the prior two years. This shift has made logic-based exploits the leading cause of such losses, surpassing price oracle manipulation attacks. A research article published in the Journal of Financial Crime details these findings. The study, authored by Tim Hall of the University of Winchester and Remo Steiger, a former SyntiFi Risk Intelligence partner, examined 72 flash loan attacks from February 2020 to July 2024, with total losses reaching $1.211 billion. Four main types of attacks were responsible for over 81% of the total damage. While flash loans themselves are legitimate tools that allow borrowers to access unsecured crypto assets within a single blockchain transaction on the condition of repayment, they provide malicious actors with significant capital to exploit vulnerabilities without personal financial risk.

ShinyHunters Resumes Large-Scale Attacks on Vulnerable Oracle PeopleSoft Systems Worldwide

ShinyHunters has resumed a large-scale attack campaign targeting vulnerable Oracle PeopleSoft systems globally, bypassing protections that organizations implemented following earlier breaches this summer. According to Google's cybersecurity unit Mandiant, the attackers are conducting a "mass exploitation" of a security flaw in PeopleSoft. After initial attacks from late May to early June focused on universities, ShinyHunters adapted their strategy. They now target organizations that deployed additional web application firewall rules but failed to apply Oracle's patch for the vulnerability. This new wave has impacted dozens of systems worldwide across sectors including higher education, technology, healthcare, agriculture, transportation, and government. Mandiant noted the group altered its tactics to access the vulnerable PeopleSoft software differently, continuing to exploit the same flaw. The campaign's activity is linked to a claimed data breach at the FBI, which the bureau says it is actively investigating. Separately, Oracle disclosed that co-founder Larry Ellis on has pledged 67 million more Oracle shares as collateral for personal loans compared to last year, worth approximately $9.2 billion. He also canceled a planned sale of up to 50 million Oracle shares, valued around $7.5 billion, shortly after its announcement. This follows Oracle's strong Q1 earnings report with revenue up 30% year-over-year to $19.3 billion.

The Illusion of $1 Billion in Volume? Testing the Real Selling and Buying Capacity of Coinbase Stock Tokens During U.S. Stock Market Closures

The article investigates the liquidity and true market depth of Coinbase's stock tokens on the Base blockchain, questioning the illusion created by over $1 billion in historical trading volume. A test on September 23 simulated selling $100,000 worth of each of 10 stock tokens (like MSFTc, NVDAc) via KyberSwap during U.S. market closure. The estimated sell price was only 0.06% to 0.71% below KyberSwap's token valuation, though this reflects a single instant order, not a concentrated sell-off. The combined balance of the core Aerodrome token/USDC pools was around $12.97 million. While small 10k orders showed minimal slippage (0.01%-0.12%), the 100k orders saw wider spreads. The article warns that liquidity relies heavily on incentives (like AERO token emissions and potential USDC rewards), which can be withdrawn if governance votes change. Although the tokens are backed by stocks in regulated custody and trade 24/7, after-hours trading carries risk: the Chainlink oracle freezes at the last market price, so the actual sell price is determined solely by secondary market liquidity, not the underlying asset's real-time value. The test shows modest liquidity for single orders, but prices could shift dramatically due to governance changes, liquidity withdrawals, or after-hours news.

Pre-market Plunge as Oracle Issues Sudden 'Force Majeure' Notice Amid Fears of $300 Billion Data Center Project Delay

Oracle has cited force majeure clauses, notifying developer Stack Infrastructure (a subsidiary of Blue Owl Capital) regarding the massive "Project Jupiter" data center venture in New Mexico. This move, aimed at potentially delaying payment obligations if the project misses its 2028 operational deadline, has intensified existing concerns about the $300 billion initiative designed to supply computing power to OpenAI. The pre-market stock prices of Oracle, Blue Owl Capital, and power supplier Bloom Energy fell following the news. While Oracle maintains the project is "on track," this defensive legal step casts further doubt on the timeline of the already-challenged special purpose vehicle (SPV), which bundles debt, loans, and equity from major financial institutions. The action signals growing uncertainty and has transmitted pressure throughout the project's complex financing chain.

Oracle Expands Digital Assets Platform

Oracle has enhanced its Digital Assets Data Nexus platform with new tools for payments, wallet management, and AI-powered transaction monitoring. The update enables businesses to connect digital asset operations with existing banking and payment infrastructure via the ISO 20022 standard, allowing traditional and digital currencies to be managed within a single system. The multi-blockchain platform supports custodial wallets, smart contracts, and the coordination of on-chain and off-chain activities. It includes tools for compliance checks, such as KYC, sanctions screening, AML, and transaction monitoring with configurable rules and limits. The Oracle AI Database consolidates transaction, smart contract, and internal process data for reconciliation, audit, and risk control. Targeted at regulated financial institutions, the platform supports stablecoins, tokenized deposits, CBDCs, digital bonds, and tokenized real-world assets. It will also integrate with Swift Ledger to link tokenized deposits with existing settlement infrastructure.

Behind the $1 Billion in Trades: How Much Selling Pressure Can Coinbase Stock Tokens Handle When the US Stock Market Is Closed?

Behind the $1 billion trading volume of Coinbase's stock tokens on Base lies a key question: how much selling pressure can the market absorb, especially during U.S. market closures? Tests on September 23 simulated selling $100,000 of each of 10 tokenized stocks via KyberSwap, revealing estimated price impacts ranging from 0.06% to 0.71% below quoted valuations. However, these are single-order estimates and do not reflect the market's capacity during concentrated sell-offs. The combined balance across 10 core Aerodrome liquidity pools was around $12.97 million, but this figure includes both tokens and USDC, not just available buy-side liquidity. While cumulative historical volume has reached $1.02 billion, this does not equate to standing buy orders ready for large sales. Liquidity relies partly on incentives for providers, such as AERO emissions and potential USDC rewards from Coinbase, which can be withdrawn if governance votes shift. Although tokens trade 24/7, during U.S. market hours when the Chainlink oracle price is static, the actual execution price depends entirely on secondary market liquidity. Authorized participants control primary minting and redemption; ordinary users must rely on decentralized pools, where pricing can shift rapidly due to liquidity changes or news.

Chainlink Announces Partnership with Infosys — IT Giant Serving 1.7 Billion Accounts

Chainlink has entered a strategic partnership with global IT leader Infosys (NYSE: INFY, market cap >$40B) to accelerate institutional blockchain financial services. Infosys, which provides critical banking and payment infrastructure for over 1.7 billion client accounts globally, will standardize the adoption of the Chainlink platform. Chainlink highlighted its CCIP (Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol), Chainlink Computing Environment (CRE), Automated Compliance Enforcement (ACE), Proof of Reserve, data streams, and feeds as key technologies for this collaboration. Infosys, a major Indian multinational competing with firms like TCS and Accenture, is not new to blockchain. Its Finacle banking software uses distributed ledger technology compatible with Ethereum, R3-Corda, and Hyperledger, and the company has previously piloted blockchain projects for international payments and applications in supply chain, healthcare, and insurance. This partnership signals a shift for major IT corporations from blockchain experimentation to deploying production-ready platforms. Competitors like Accenture (also a Chainlink partner) and TCS are taking similar approaches, with TCS similarly focusing on integrating legacy financial systems with blockchain. The move reflects growing institutional trust in decentralized systems as they mature from pilots to operational platforms.

Trueo Chooses Ethereum Blockchain for Further Development of Its Service

The prediction market platform Trueo plans to migrate its infrastructure from Base to the Ethereum mainnet. Initially launched on Base in March 2025 for its low transaction costs, the platform now seeks broader integration capabilities and a more neutral environment for development. The team believes Ethereum offers superior interoperability with other market participants compared to Base's more ecosystem-centric focus. Following the migration, key priorities will be increasing liquidity to improve market depth and launching a next-generation oracle system. This upgraded oracle is critical for reliably fetching, verifying, and reporting real-world event outcomes to smart contracts, which is fundamental for the platform's prediction resolution and user payouts.
