Despite a broader slowdown in decentralized finance (DeFi), tokenized real-world assets (RWAs) are gaining significant traction, with deposits on DeFi platforms more than tripling year-over-year to $7.4 billion in Q2 2026, according to a CoinShares and Token Terminal report. This growth, occurring while overall DeFi deposits fell 15%, suggests demand is driven by financial utility rather than market cycles. Yield-bearing stablecoins and tokenized Treasuries like BlackRock's BUIDL fund are leading RWA deposits, offering yields from 3.2% to 5.5%. Gold-backed tokens and yield-bearing dollar products drove most RWA spot trading on decentralized exchanges, with volumes rising 220% year-over-year against a 70% overall DEX decline. RWA activity is also expanding into leveraged derivatives markets, with perpetual futures trading growing, particularly for commodities, equity indexes, and tech stocks.

Real-world assets (RWAs) are gaining momentum as tokenized versions of traditional investments move beyond issuance and become active parts of onchain financial markets.

RWA deposits across decentralized finance platforms more than tripled year over year to $7.4 billion in the second quarter of 2026, while total DeFi deposits fell about 15%, according to a joint report by CoinShares and Token Terminal published Thursday.

CoinShares CEO Jean-Marie Mognetti said the divergence shows that RWA demand is being driven by practical use cases rather than broader market conditions.

“When an asset class grows through a downturn in its host ecosystem, demand is being driven by financial utility, not by market cycles,” he said.

The report suggested that the RWA market is entering a new phase, with investors using them as collateral, yield-generating instruments and trading products across onchain markets.

Yield-bearing stablecoins and Treasuries lead RWA deposits

Yield-bearing stablecoins and tokenized Treasury products have emerged as the largest categories of RWA assets used across DeFi, according to the report.

In Q2, Sky Protocol’s sUSDS led the category, giving holders exposure to a yield-generating version of its USDS stablecoin.

Tokenized Treasury funds, including BlackRock’s USD Institutional Digital Liquidity Fund (BUIDL), have also become a major source of onchain collateral, as investors use yield-bearing assets in decentralized lending markets.

The report said that RWA products currently offer yields ranging from about 3.2% to 5.5%, with lower-risk Treasury products at the bottom of the range and higher-yield strategies carrying additional risks.

Gold and yield-bearing dollars drive RWA volumes

Gold-backed tokens and yield-bearing dollar products accounted for much of the RWA trading activity on decentralized exchanges (DEXs).

CoinShares classified gold-backed stablecoins such as Tether Gold (XAUt) and Paxos Gold (PAXG) as tokenized gold products within its broader RWA category.

These assets generated significant trading volume as investors traded around gold price swings, while yield-bearing dollar products such as Ethena’s sUSDe also contributed to RWA spot activity.

RWA spot trading volumes rose roughly 220% year over year, even as overall DEX volumes fell about 70%. The divergence suggests tokenized assets are gaining traction as secondary markets, allowing investors to trade ownership rather than only buy assets directly from issuers.

RWAs expand into leveraged markets

Onchain exposure to RWAs is also expanding into derivatives markets, where traders can take leveraged positions without owning the underlying assets.

RWA perpetual futures trading has continued growing despite a broader slowdown in crypto-native derivatives markets. On tradeXYZ, an RWA-focused perpetual futures platform built on Hyperliquid, trading volume has increased roughly 20 times since launch, the report said.

Activity has concentrated around commodities, equity indexes such as the S&P 500 and Nasdaq-100, and technology stocks, while open interest has also continued rising.

Senate to Vote on CLARITY Act Before August Recess, Lummis Says

U.S. Senator Cynthia Lummis (R-WY), chair of the Senate's digital assets subcommittee, stated the Senate may work past Friday and through the weekend to secure a vote on the CLARITY Act before the August recess. This vote would force senators to take a public position on the bill. Over 300 pages of amendments, requested by Democrats, have been prepared after 11 months of negotiations, with final discussions ongoing regarding CFTC jurisdiction, law enforcement provisions, and ethics rules for senior federal officials. Key unresolved issues, per Democratic staff, include securities protection, illicit finance, national security, and presidential conflicts of interest. A bipartisan counterproposal, allowing state attorneys general to enforce federal crypto ethics rules, has been sent to President Trump, who reportedly agreed to broader restrictions than those applied to previous presidents. Lummis asserted that if the bill fails, it will be due to Democratic opposition. Regulators have expressed support. CFTC Chairman Michael S. Selig endorsed congressional action for clearer digital asset rules, while SEC Chairman Paul Atkins expressed optimism about the bill's passage. The CLARITY Act aims to divide oversight between the CFTC and SEC, providing distinct regulatory frameworks for cryptocurrencies and securities. Proponents argue this clarity will help retain crypto companies, capital, and innovation within the United States, preventing an exodus to jurisdictions like Switzerland or Singapore. The approaching recess deadline increases pressure to secure the 60 votes typically needed. With Republicans holding 53 seats, Democratic support is crucial. A Senate vote would lock in each legislator's stance before negotiations with the House on a final bill text.

Stocks and Gold Soar Together, Why Is Only BTC "Playing Dead"?

U.S. stocks and gold surged while Bitcoin remained stagnant. This report examines this stillness: a major theft that barely moved the market, bottom signals forming through boredom rather than panic capitulation, and an options market priced for inactivity yet emotionally reactive. Despite record highs in equities and gold, and a sharp repricing in oil, Bitcoin was the only major asset that didn't move. A 594 BTC theft triggered the movement of dormant coins worth 200 times the stolen amount, yet price showed no reaction, indicating a market with neither active buying nor selling pressure. Bitcoin's bottom signals are forming atypically—through prolonged, low-volatility decline compressing the profit supply metric into a bottom-like zone, but without the final capitulatory washout seen in prior cycles. The key "Seller Exhaustion Constant" is near but not at historical bear market lows. Critically, the structural institutional buying from the past two years (via U.S. spot ETFs and corporate treasuries) has reversed, with ETFs experiencing record outflows. Options markets show extreme compression, with upside implied volatility at historic lows, indicating a lack of demand for bullish bets. However, short-term sentiment remains skittish, flipping dramatically on minor price moves. Historically, such volatility squeezes almost always resolve upward, but this time it coincides with absent demand engines. In summary, the market is compressed, under-positioned, and lagging global risk appetite. Bottom conditions are assembling but are incomplete, lacking a final forced sell-off. The return of sustained ETF inflows or an upward expansion from the volatility squeeze would signal improvement. The current state of "priced for zero movement but overreacting to everything" is unstable.

The S&P 500 Hits Another Record High, But Your Tech Stocks Are Still 'Unwinding'?

The S&P 500 reached a new all-time high on August 4, 2026, closing at 7,736.52 points. However, while major market indices like the Dow Jones also hit records, many prominent technology and semiconductor stocks, such as Nvidia, remained significantly below their recent peaks. This divergence highlights the crucial investing principle of diversification. The S&P 500 is a market-cap-weighted index comprising 500 large U.S. companies across eleven sectors. While Information Technology is the largest sector (~30% weight), the remaining ~70% is distributed across Financials, Healthcare, Industrials, and others. In June and July 2026, as tech and AI-related stocks faced sell-offs due to events like the CXMT IPO and concerns over AI capital returns, other sectors like Healthcare and Financials outperformed. This sector rotation allowed the broader S&P 500 index to advance even as the tech-heavy Nasdaq lagged. The article explains that true diversification means losses in one area (e.g., semiconductors) can be offset by gains in others (e.g., banks, hospitals). It also notes a current concentration risk: the top 10 S&P 500 companies now make up over 37% of the index's weight—a modern high—meaning a few giants like Nvidia, Apple, and Microsoft have an outsized influence. An alternative, the equal-weight S&P 500 (RSP), reduces this tech dominance and has outperformed the cap-weighted version year-to-date in 2026. The key takeaway is that a market index hitting new highs reflects the aggregate performance of its constituents, not every individual stock. For investors concentrated in tech stocks, their experience differs sharply from those holding a broad index fund. The recent market action serves as a practical lesson: diversification is not just a theory but a built-in mechanism that helps cushion a portfolio when specific sectors struggle.
