DeFi Losses Pass $600M in Three Weeks With Kelp DAO Bridge Exploit

Total value locked across DeFi fell to approximately $82.4 billion, down 25% from the $110 billion recorded at the start of 2026
The decentralized finance sector has absorbed more than $600 million in losses over the past three weeks, driven by a string of platform exploits. The most recent and largest came Saturday, when an attacker drained $292 million from Kelp DAO's cross-chain bridge, sending sector-wide metrics to their lowest point in a year.

Total value locked across DeFi fell to approximately $82.4 billion, down 25% from the $110 billion recorded at the start of 2026. The day following the Kelp DAO exploit, DeFi posted a single-session drawdown of about 5.6%. That places the move near the 98th percentile of severity since 2024.

Lending markets bore the steepest losses, with TVL falling around 13%. Liquid staking declined roughly 3.4%, while decentralized exchanges and derivatives protocols each dropped between 2% and 3%. Crypto security firm Halborn separately estimated that $86 million was lost to DeFi attacks in January, $23.5 million in February, and over $27 million in March.

The $292 million Kelp DAO incident followed a roughly $285 million exploit of Drift Protocol earlier this month, which stands as the largest Solana-based hack on record. Smaller breaches at Resolv Labs, Hyperbridge, and Rhea Finance added to the cumulative total.

The Kelp DAO attacker manipulated a cross-chain message to drain rsETH from a bridge powered by LayerZero. The stolen assets were then deposited as collateral on Aave, pulling the lending protocol into the fallout. Preliminary findings from security researchers have linked the attack to the North Korean hacking group Lazarus.

Aave froze rsETH on its platform to contain further exposure.

Arbitrum Freezes $71.2M ETH Tied to Kelp Protocol Hack
The frozen ETH can no longer be accessed by the address that originally held the funds.
Arbitrum's security council voted to freeze 30,766 ETH worth approximately $71.2 million on Monday, moving the funds to an intermediary wallet after tracing them to an address connected to the recent Kelp protocol exploit.

The Kelp liquid restaking protocol was hacked on Saturday through its LayerZero-powered bridge, with attackers draining at least $293 million. LayerZero attributed the attack to a state-sponsored threat actor, without providing further attribution details publicly.

The frozen ETH can no longer be accessed by the address that originally held the funds. Arbitrum said the assets "can only be moved by further action by Arbitrum governance," placing them under collective institutional control pending further review.

Nine of the 12 elected members of the Arbitrum Security Council voted in favor of the freeze. Council member Griff Green posted on X that the group "did not make this decision lightly, there were countless hours of debates, technical, practical, ethical and political." Arbitrum added that the council acted with input from LawEnforcement.

The Kelp exploit has created millions of dollars in bad debt across the broader crypto lending market. Attackers used stolen Kelp tokens as collateral to borrow cryptocurrencies on the lending platform Aave, leaving that protocol exposed to unrecoverable losses.

The freeze drew immediate criticism on X, where multiple users questioned whether Arbitrum qualifies as a decentralized network if a 12-member council can immobilize funds by decree. The tension reflects a long-running debate in the crypto sector over whether emergency intervention mechanisms undermine the core properties of blockchain technology or serve as a necessary safeguard.

OCBC Launches GOLDX Tokenized Gold Fund on ETH and SOL

Following subscription, GOLDX tokens are delivered directly to investors' blockchain wallets, OCBC said Monday.

Singapore's OCBC bank has launched GOLDX, a tokenized physical gold fund issued on both the Ethereum and Solana blockchains, in partnership with its asset management arm Lion Global Investors and digital asset exchange DigiFT.

The token is aimed at institutional investors, hedge funds, and asset managers, and can be purchased using stablecoins or fiat currencies. Following subscription, GOLDX tokens are delivered directly to investors' blockchain wallets, OCBC said Monday.

GOLDX provides on-chain exposure to the LionGlobal Singapore Physical Gold Fund, which launched in December and held approximately $525 million in assets under management as of April 16. OCBC said the product is designed to attract Web3 participants and high-net-worth individuals operating in blockchain and cryptocurrency ecosystems.

Arbitrum, the layer-2 blockchain of Ethereum, froze over 30,000 Ether, or over $71.2 million, in a wallet linked to the recent Kelp protocol exploit on Monday.

On Monday, Arbitrum said that a 12-member security committee chosen by the Arbitrum community had taken “emergency action” to seize 30,766 Ether from a wallet linked to the Kelp vulnerability. It went on to say that the original holding address could no longer access the ETH since it had been transferred to “an intermediary frozen wallet”; only further action by Arbitrum governance could restore access to the funds.

On Saturday, the LayerZero-powered bridge of the liquid restaking protocol Kelp was hacked for a minimum of $293 million. LayerZero has since accused North Korea of being responsible for the assault. The attackers borrowed cryptocurrency on the Aave lending platform using stolen Kelp tokens, resulting in millions of dollars’ worth of “bad debt” in the intricate crypto lending market.

Decentralization Debate

Blockchain crypto freezes are a contentious topic in the cryptocurrency industry, with some saying they undermine the technology’s intended use and others saying they improve security and keep networks running smoothly.

Given that the freeze was imposed by a council ordinance, some X users voiced their disapproval of Arbitrum and raised concerns about its decentralization. Arbitrum Security Council member Griff Green wrote on X that the committee deliberated this issue for several hours, debating all aspects of it from a technical to a practical to an ethical and political perspective. Although Green could not provide any further information, but did mention that nine out of the twelve council members decided to freeze the funds.
