After struggling to break and sustain above $72,500, BTC saw a steady decline, breaking through $71,500 and $71,200 support levels before finding a temporary low around $70,517. This move reflects a clear shift toward profit-taking and increased caution among traders after the recent rally.
Technically, Bitcoin is now trading below the 100-hour moving average, with a bearish trend line forming around $71,450 acting as immediate resistance. If BTC fails to reclaim the $72,000 level soon, downside pressure could extend toward $70,000 and potentially $69,200 in the near term.
On the other hand, if buyers manage to defend the $70,500 support, a recovery attempt could emerge, with resistance levels at $71,500 and $72,000 becoming key areas to watch for a potential bounce back toward $73,000+.

Bitcoin and other major cryptocurrencies fell on Sunday after Trump ordered the naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, signaling a potential escalation in the U.S.-Iran conflict.

Bitcoin, Ethereum, and the wider cryptocurrency market declined on Sunday after U.S. negotiators failed to reach a peace agreement with Iranian officials.

According to The Block's crypto price page, bitcoin ￼BTC-0.92%￼

 fell 2.6% over the past 24 hours to $71,093 as of 9:28 p.m. ET on Sunday. The cryptocurrency dropped to a low of around $70,600 earlier in the day.

Meanwhile, Ethereum slid 3.6% to $2,202, XRP dipped 2% to $1.33, and Solana fell 3.25% to $82. The GMCI 30 index, which tracks the performance of the top 30 cryptocurrencies, was down 2.5% in the past 24 hours.

"Geopolitical headlines dominated crypto markets today as U.S.-Iran peace talks in Islamabad collapsed after 21 hours, triggering a sharp risk-off move," said BTC Markets Crypto Analyst Rachael Lucas. 

Despite 21 hours of negotiations in Islamabad, U.S. and Iranian officials failed to resolve the protracted war. U.S. Vice President JD Vance said on Sunday that Iranian representatives were unwilling to accept U.S. terms. In contrast, Iran's state media said the talks collapsed due to "unreasonable demands" from the U.S.

While President Donald Trump's two-week ceasefire announcement prompted crypto and other risk assets to rally last week, investors remained cautious, as a full peace deal would likely require one party to make the difficult choice of softening its stance.

Macro analyst Jordi Visser laid out a specific scenario on Friday that he believes would confirm a lasting crypto market recovery. He said both conditions need to be met at the same time, not one in isolation.

Visser said on the Anthony Pompliano podcast that Bitcoin crossing $76,000 while Ethereum trades above $2,400 would mark the start of a move that he expects would hold through the rest of 2026. He said that outcome depends, however, on the U.S. economy avoiding a recession.

Bitcoin was at $70,946 and Ethereum was near $2,200 at the time of publication, according to CoinMarketCap. The gap to Visser's thresholds works out to roughly 6% for Bitcoin and around 8% for Ethereum.

Traders on prediction platform Kalshi were assigning a 24% probability to a U.S. recession in 2026 at the time of reporting. That figure had fallen by 10 percentage points over the prior 30 days. Visser cited that declining probability as consistent with his view that growth will hold.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported a 3.3% year-over-year rise in the Consumer Price Index in April. Visser said persistent inflation would push investors toward assets capable of generating returns while equities remain flat.
