A StarkWare researcher has proposed a method for making Bitcoin (Bitcoin) transactions resistant to quantum computing attacks without requiring any change to the existing protocol. Avihu Levy, chief product officer at StarkWare, published the proposal Thursday under the name Quantum Safe Bitcoin, or QSB, describing a transaction scheme he said would remain secure "even against an adversary with a large-scale quantum computer running Shor's algorithm."

The scheme replaces the standard elliptic curve digital signature algorithm used in Bitcoin transactions with what Levy describes as a hash-to-sig puzzle. Instead of relying on elliptic curve mathematics, which quantum computers could break using Shor's algorithm, a sender must find an input whose hash output resembles a valid ECDSA signature through brute-force computation, a process that quantum computers cannot meaningfully accelerate.p
