Will South Korea shun Won stablecoins?

Surprisingly, the traditional stablecoins, mostly issued by fintechs, were missing from the speech. 

One would expect that the recent push for Won-based stablecoins to counter USDT and USDC dominance would earn them a feature in Hyun-Song’s speech. 

Well, Hyun-Song was a former head of monetary policy and advisor at the BIS (Bank for International Settlements), commonly called the bank for central banks. 

His former employer has always doubted the use of stablecoins, stressing their risks to the stability of financial markets. Whether he will adopt BIS’s strong stance against stablecoins remains to be seen. 

That said, interest in Won-stablecoin has surged with over trademarks. Supporters believe that the products could help solve the ‘Kimchi Premium,’ where crypto assets trade higher in South Korea than overseas. 

Still, critics argue the products would eventually accelerate capital outflows that regulators are trying to curb.

Tron's Justin Sun sues Trump-linked World Liberty Financial over frozen assets



Tron creator Justin Sun sued World Liberty Financial, the stablecoin and crypto firm backed by members of U.S. President Donald Trump's family, on Tuesday, alleging that the project had unfairly locked up his $WLFI tokens, made fraudulent misrepresentations, and threatened and defamed Sun.

The lawsuit filed Tuesday, which includes a line about Sun's support for Trump himself, alleged that World Liberty's leadership had engaged "in an illegal scheme to seize property" in the form of Sun's tokens, which Sun alleged he had purchased after being solicited by the World Liberty team in 2024.

"At that pivotal time for World Liberty, Mr. Sun invested $45 million to purchase $WLFI tokens from World Liberty not only because of the project’s claims that it would promote adoption of decentralized finance — an issue Mr. Sun cares deeply about and to which he has devoted much of his life’s work — but also because of theTrump family’s association with the project," the suit said.

World Liberty asked Sun to continue investing through 2025, including through a request to mint World Liberty's $USD1 stablecoin, the filing said. "By July 2025, when it became clear that Mr. Sun would not invest or mint $USD1 on their terms, World Liberty principals became hostile toward Mr. Sun."

"World Liberty induced Plaintiffs to make their investments in World Liberty through fraudulent misrepresentations and omissions about the economic rights and liberties that would come with purchasing $WLFI tokens," the filing said.

These allegedly fraudulent misrepresentations include statements about the rights token holders had, various public statements World Liberty or its executives made about the governance rights of token holders, and statements about "freedom to transact."

The entity behind the roughly $290 million Kelp DAO breach has started moving large volumes of Ether into fresh wallet addresses, in what appears to be the early stages of obfuscating the stolen funds after the exploit. Summary The attacker behind the $290M Kelp DAO exploit has moved 75,700 ETH worth ~$175M across new wallets, with early transfers routed via THORChain and Umbra. Arbitrum froze 30,766 ETH tied to the breach, while Aave faces potential bad debt between $123.7M and $230.1M after the attacker used stolen funds as collateral. LayerZero blamed a single-verifier setup for the exploit, while Kelp DAO disputed the claim, saying the configuration followed default infrastructure guidelines. Data from Arkham shows the address tied to the incident transferred about 75,700 Ether, worth nearly $175 million, across three transactions on Tuesday. The movements included a 25,000 ETH transfer to a newly created wallet, along with additional transfers of 50,700 ETH and 0.7 ETH to another address. On-chain investigator ZachXBT noted in a Telegram update that part of the stolen funds had already begun flowing through privacy-focused infrastructure, including THORChain and Umbra. He identified three THORChain transactions totaling about $1.5 million, alongside a separate $78,000 transfer routed via Umbra. The exploit itself took place on Saturday, when roughly 116,500 restaked Ether (rsETH), valued between $290 million and $293 million at the time, was siphoned from Kelp DAO’s bridge built on LayerZero.
