Bitcoin's network just recorded its lowest activity in eight years, and the price has barely flinched.

CryptoQuant flagged that active BTC addresses hit their lowest level since 2016 on Apr. 8. At the same time, Glassnode's latest 24-hour reading puts active addresses at 661,313, a number that, set against a price near $78,000, produces one of the more uncomfortable charts in recent crypto history.

The reading that quiet networks are quiet markets misses what has changed structurally. A growing share of Bitcoin exposure now trades without leaving any footprint on the base layer.

BlackRock's IBIT delivers Bitcoin exposure through exchange-traded shares, and CME's Bitcoin futures settle in cash. A fund manager rotating into Bitcoin through either vehicle never touches a wallet, never opens an address, never appears in Glassnode's address count.

Price discovery increasingly happens in ETF order books and futures markets. The chart mismatch is partly due to sentiment and partly to Bitcoin acquiring a second market structure on top of its original one.

All investors want a crystal ball, and while they're unlikely to find one, sometimes there's a substitute. Bitcoin's (CRYPTO: BTC) chart features a pattern that has preceded every major bull market in the digital coin's history.

But there's a wrinkle that separates informed investors from chart watchers, so let's unpack this signal so that you know how to use it (and how not to).
The 200-day simple moving average (SMA) of an asset is an average of its closing prices over the prior 200 days, and it's one of the most watched long-term trend indicators in financial markets. With Bitcoin, when its shorter-term 50-day SMA crosses above the 200-day SMA, in a signal that's known as a "golden cross," the rallies that follow have historically been enormous.
There's no guarantee that what happened in the past will happen again, but Bitcoin bulls like their odds.

The crossover in February 2023 kicked off a 43% rally; October 2023's signal led to a 148% surge. October 2024's golden cross preceded Bitcoin climbing from roughly $65,000 past $110,000 to new all-time highs, making for a gain of about 72%.

But don't get too excited. Right now, Bitcoin is not on the verge of experiencing any golden cross, and it usually isn't smart to make long-term investing decisions based on such technical indicators, as sometimes investors (mistakenly) use them as a substitute for an investment thesis.

The $292 million Kelp exploit: how it happened, and what it means for DeFi



A roughly $292 million exploit over the weekend has rattled the crypto industry, exposing vulnerabilities in decentralized finance (DeFi) infrastructure and raising concerns about knock-on effects across lending protocols.

While investigations are still ongoing, early analysis suggests the attack centered on Kelp’s rsETH token — a yield-bearing version of ether ($ETH) — and the mechanism used to move assets between blockchains.

The attacker appears to have manipulated that system to create large amounts of tokens without proper backing, then quickly used them as collateral to borrow and drain real assets from lending markets, mostly from Aave , the largest decentralized crypto lender.

The incident is the latest blow to DeFi, happening only a couple weeks after the $285 million exploit of Solana-based protocol Drift, further denting investor trust in the nearly $90 billion crypto sector.

How the attack worked

At a high level, the exploit targeted a LayerZero bridge component — a piece of infrastructure that enables assets to move across different blockchains, Charles Guillemet, CTO of hardware wallet maker Ledger, told CoinDesk in a note.

Bridges typically work by locking assets on one chain and minting equivalent tokens on another. That process depends on a trusted entity — often called an oracle or validator — to confirm deposits.

In this case, Kelp effectively acted as that verifier. According to Guillemet, the system relied on a single-signer setup, meaning just one entity could approve any transactions.

"It seems the attacker was able to sign a message … allowing him to mint large amount of rsETH," he said. He added that it remains unclear how that access was obtained.

Michael Egorov, founder of Curve Finance, pointed to the same weakness in the system's configuration.
