Bitcoin should prepare now, even if quantum is a 'lab experiment’: Adam Back

Blockstream CEO Adam Back, an early pioneer of the crypto movement, said Bitcoiners should be looking at building quantum-resistant solutions now, even if the threat is still decades away.

“Quantum computing still has a lot to prove. Current systems are essentially lab experiments. I’ve followed the field for over 25 years, and progress has been incremental,” Back said at Paris Blockchain Week on Tuesday.

“That said, Bitcoin should prepare,” Back said, adding that the “safest approach” is to build optional upgrades that allow migration to quantum-resistant cryptography if needed.

Concerns that quantum computers could eventually break blockchain cryptography have fueled industry-wide fear that bad actors could use it to break into crypto wallets, plunging the market into chaos.

Back said in November that the quantum threat is still 20 to 40 years away, while explaining to Bloomberg earlier this month that today’s quantum computers are slower than calculators.

Despite this, his Bitcoin development company, Blockstream, has a dedicated quantum team researching potential threat vectors to the Bitcoin network.

Part of that work has involved implementing hash-based signatures on Blockstream’s Bitcoin layer-2 Liquid Network, Back said at Paris Blockchain Week.

“Preparation is key. Making changes in a controlled way is far safer than reacting in a crisis.”

He added that the Taproot protocol could also support alternative signature schemes on the Bitcoin network without affecting current users.

Last month, Google and California Institute of Technology researchers said functional quantum computers could come sooner than expected and that far less computing power is needed to break cryptography than previously thought.

Bitcoin’s rally toward $75,000 is running into a wall of supply just as institutional demand is holding steady.

The move higher has been driven largely by macro flows rather than a broad surge in speculative activity. U.S.-listed spot bitcoin ETFs have continued to draw consistent inflows this month, including roughly $240 million in a single session following geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, according to market maker Enflux.

That bid helped lift $BTC from around $71,000 to the mid-$70,000s, even as traditional markets absorbed rising oil prices and shifting rate expectations. The pattern, Enflux noted, reflects allocation behavior rather than momentum chasing.

But as bitcoin pushes higher, the character of the market is starting to change.

Solana Policy Institute-backed PAC spends millions to jam Sherrod Brown's Senate run


A conservative U.S. political action committee backed by the Solana Policy Institute — the Sentinel Action Fund — has committed to a massive advertising spend on the political opponent of former Senator Sherrod Brown, a Democrat and prominent crypto skeptic who is trying to return to Washington in this year's Ohio Senate election.

Sentinel and its affiliated nonprofit, Right Vote, committed $8 million to Jon Husted, the Republican named to fill Vice President JD Vance's seat, according to a Wednesday statement. The committee accused his opponent, Brown, who had been the chairman of the Senate Banking Committee prior to losing his seat in 2024, of having "stood in the way of pro-innovation policies when it comes to digital assets."

The super PAC is partially funded by the Solana Institute and crypto venture firm Multicoin Capital, in addition to several high-profile financial figures such as Blackstone CEO Stephen Schwarzman, Ken Fisher of Fisher Investments, AQR Capital Management co-founder Cliff Asness and Paul Singer, the billionaire co-CEO of hedge fund Elliott Management who has a stake in Michael Saylor's bitcoin behemoth, Strategy.

The leading donor to the PAC, though, is a nonprofit, Townsend Six Corp., which was established in late 2024 and backed by an $8 million contribution from an unidentified donor.

The Ohio election will be among the hotly contested Senate battles that decide the majority of that chamber for next year. While the lineup of open seats had been a difficult one for Democrats, the slip in Republican popularity during the administration of President Donald Trump has given Democrats a chance to retake that majority.

While polling last year had indicated that Husted had a strong lead over Brown, more recent polls have shown the race going neck and neck.
