Ex-SEC acting chair: Agency dropped crypto cases to avoid issues with credibility

Former acting SEC Chair Mark Uyeda stated that the agency dismissed several civil cases against cryptocurrency companies in early 2025 to avoid damaging its credibility in court. Uyeda, who served as acting chair from January to April 2025, explained that the SEC was preparing a major policy shift and did not want its litigators arguing positions in court that would contradict the upcoming rule changes. The dropped cases, filed under the prior administration of Chair Gary Gensler, involved companies like Kraken, Ripple Labs, and Coinbase. Critics viewed the dismissals as political payback for the crypto industry's support of Donald Trump, who had vowed to fire Gensler. Gensler resigned when Trump took office. Uyeda argued there were significant concerns about the legal justifications for the original cases.

Japan is dragging the world down with it

Japan's 10-year government bond yield surpassed 3% for the first time since 1996. According to a Nomura Research Institute report, the primary driver of this global rise in long-term interest rates is Japan's domestic factors, not external influences. A key contributor is the heightened risk premium due to concerns over Japan's deteriorating fiscal situation, which outweighs the impact of inflation expectations and monetary policy shifts. The report identifies three main factors behind the yield surge: expectations of Federal Reserve rate hikes, anticipation of a Bank of Japan policy rate increase, and significant risks from Japan's expanding fiscal budget. Notably, fiscal risk premiums are the largest single factor pushing yields higher. The Trump administration has unusually intervened in Japan's economic policy, urging both monetary tightening and fiscal consolidation. This move aims to mitigate potential global negative spillovers from a weak yen and rising Japanese bond yields. Nomura warns that this Japan-originated rise in global long-term rates poses systemic risks. It could increase government debt servicing costs, destabilize financial institutions' balance sheets, and depress risk asset prices, particularly in real estate and equities. Tech and AI-related stocks, being highly sensitive to interest rates, could see a significant cooling-off in investment enthusiasm. This scenario might trigger not just a gradual economic slowdown but a sudden deceleration, explaining the U.S. administration's direct intervention.

Trump's Onshoring Plan Involving Hyperliquid Reaches $30 Million from North Korean Funds

This article reports on the use of the decentralized exchange Hyperliquid to launder over $30 million in Bitcoin by North Korean hackers over three weeks, according to blockchain analysis by Arkham. The activity coincides with efforts by former U.S. President Donald Trump and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) to bring offshore derivatives exchanges under U.S. jurisdiction. Hyperliquid, which is negotiating U.S. market access via a potential deal with Kraken's parent company Payward and the regulated clearinghouse Bitnomial, has faced previous criticism for connections to North Korean wallets. While the platform denies any hack or loss of user funds, the incident highlights the regulatory challenge of applying U.S. sanctions and compliance rules—like customer verification and sanctions screening—to permissionless DeFi platforms. North Korea is estimated to have stolen billions in crypto, often to fund weapons programs. Meanwhile, Hyperliquid's token $HYPE saw a price surge following Trump's public comments on the platform, even as reports suggest other exchanges are calling for investigations into it for market manipulation and sanctions violations. The proposed U.S. access plan through Bitnomial is not yet CFTC-approved, and it remains unclear how Hyperliquid's architecture would block wallets linked to entities like Lazarus.

Trump's Initiative to Develop Cryptocurrency Market Regulations by SEC and CFTC Has Stalled

The Trump administration's initiative to have the SEC and CFTC develop rules for cryptocurrency markets has stalled as the key legislative bill, the CLARITY Act, remains stuck in the Senate. Lawmakers have only about 14 working days after their recess to pass the bill before the October elections, but it faces opposition from Democrats seeking stricter anti-money laundering rules and from a lawsuit by CME Group against the CFTC. Republicans have amended the bill to ban officials from issuing cryptocurrencies, but parties disagree on enforcement. As a workaround, the SEC is expected to propose a rule soon exempting some token offerings from securities regulations, while the CFTC plans to discuss cryptocurrencies at an industry event. A White House meeting with crypto industry leaders is also scheduled. However, industry leaders prefer legislation over agency rules, as rules can be challenged in court or revoked by a future administration. The SEC recently canceled a vote on its first official crypto-specific regulation, fearing it could undermine the CLARITY Act's chances. Pressure is mounting on the SEC to finalize rules before Commissioner Hester Peirce, who leads the agency's crypto task force, leaves in 2026. The SEC has also delayed an "innovation exemption" plan opposed by traditional financial groups.

Bloomberg: How a16z Became the Key Force Behind U.S. AI Policy?

This article from Bloomberg details how venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) has become a dominant, behind-the-scenes force shaping U.S. artificial intelligence (AI) policy, particularly under the Trump administration. Through massive lobbying, close relationships with key figures like Donald Trump, and a network of former staff in government roles, a16z aggressively promotes a deregulatory agenda. The firm argues that strict rules would stifle innovation and harm U.S. competitiveness, positioning itself as a defender of small startups while its own massive portfolio benefits from a lax regulatory environment. a16z's chief lobbyist, Collin McCune, is often the first external call for White House officials and Republican aides considering AI legislation. The firm played a key role in supporting a Trump executive order that blocked states from enacting their own AI safety laws. Co-founder Marc Andreessen, a major Republican donor, wields significant influence through meetings and donations. Despite its "small tech" rhetoric, critics note a16z's substantial investments in giant tech companies and its opposition to any major new regulations. Its influence has made legislative compromise difficult, even causing friction with larger tech companies willing to negotiate. The firm is now focused on crafting federal AI standards designed to preempt state laws and endure beyond the current administration.

a16z: How Did It Become the Key Force Behind U.S. AI Policy?

a16z, a prominent Silicon Valley venture capital firm, has become a key behind-the-scenes force shaping U.S. AI policy, particularly under the Trump administration. With $90 billion in assets and significant investments in AI startups like Cursor and LM Arena, a16z advocates for minimal regulation, arguing that strict rules would stifle innovation and harm small startups. The firm’s influence stems from massive lobbying spending ($3.53 million in 2025), co-founder Marc Andreessen’s close ties to Donald Trump, and a network of former employees in key government roles. a16z successfully pushed for an executive order limiting state-level AI regulations and opposes federal oversight that could impede AI development. Critics argue the firm’s pro-“small tech” narrative is hypocritical given its stakes in large companies like SpaceX and Meta, and that its policies prioritize industry growth over safety and accountability. Despite opposition, a16z continues to drive the agenda toward light-touch federal standards aimed at preempting state laws.

Tiger Research: One Year into the Trump Administration, the Transformation of the U.S. Crypto Industry

Under the Trump administration's second term, the U.S. has aggressively shifted toward pro-cryptocurrency policies, aiming to integrate the industry into the existing financial regulatory framework rather than suppress it. Over the past year, key agencies including the SEC, CFTC, and OCC have implemented significant changes: the SEC moved from enforcement-heavy approaches to creating clearer rules for token classification; the CFTC recognized Bitcoin and Ethereum as commodities and allowed their use as collateral; the OCC granted national trust bank charters to major crypto firms like Circle and Ripple, enabling federal-level operations. Congress passed the GENIUS Act, establishing strict reserve requirements for stablecoins. Despite internal tensions—such as debates over privacy tools like Tornado Cash—the U.S. is advancing a cohesive strategy to absorb crypto into traditional finance, reducing uncertainty while supporting innovation and aiming to position itself as the global center for the industry.
