Former FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried has reportedly asked the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn his 2023 fraud conviction.
According to a court document filed on Thursday and reviewed by CNN, he is seeking a new trial and the reversal of an $11 billion forfeiture order.
His attorneys stated that the trial judge excluded evidence that his investments were sound and would have covered FTX customer losses. They also argued that the $11 billion forfeiture violates the Eighth Amendment's prohibition on excessive fines.
On June 12, a panel of three judges from the U.S. Second Circuit Court of Appeals upheld his conviction and 25-year prison sentence. He has also petitioned U.S. President Donald Trump for clemency.
In March 2024, Bankman-Fried was sentenced to 25 years in prison after being found guilty on seven counts of fraud and conspiracy.
Prosecutors stated that he used billions of dollars in FTX customer funds to pay debts of Alameda Research, finance investments, make political donations, and cover personal expenses.
