Bloomberg: Increasing Treasury Buyback Scale in Mid-August is Unusual, Possibly Related to Trump Pressure

08/20 10:51

Ira Jersey, Chief Interest Rate Strategist at Bloomberg, believes that the U.S. Treasury's decision to expand the scale of long-term Treasury buyback operations at this time is an extremely rare move. He stated that the Treasury has previously emphasized that policies should be 'regular and predictable,' and such adjustments are typically signaled several quarters in advance. However, this announcement came suddenly in mid-August, which is something he has never encountered in his career. Jersey suggests that this actually reflects the Trump administration's desire to lower long-term U.S. Treasury yields to alleviate the high-interest pressure on the real estate and financing markets. However, he also noted that the current rise in U.S. Treasuries is likely more due to short covering in a low liquidity environment, and its sustainability remains limited. Unless new catalysts emerge, such as further reductions in short-term debt issuance or significantly weaker economic data, there may not be much room for further declines in long-term yields.
