TrapDoor malware targets crypto and AI developers through open-source packages, security firm warns

Cybersecurity firm Socket has issued a warning about a new malware campaign dubbed ‘TrapDoor’ that specifically targets software developers working in cryptocurrency, decentralized finance (DeFi), and artificial intelligence (AI) sectors. According to a blog post published by Socket and reported by Cointelegraph, attackers are uploading malicious packages to widely used developer libraries such as npm and PyPI.

How the TrapDoor malware infects developers
Socket explained that the threat actors behind TrapDoor are embedding malicious code inside seemingly legitimate packages. Developers who unknowingly download and install these packages into their projects become infected. Once active, the malware functions as an info-stealer, designed to extract sensitive data from compromised systems.

The primary targets include cryptocurrency wallet extensions such as MetaMask and Phantom, as well as SSH keys and GitHub authentication tokens. By capturing these credentials, attackers can gain unauthorized access to developers’ digital assets and source code repositories, ultimately leading to asset theft.

Why this matters for the crypto and AI developer community
Developers in the crypto, DeFi, and AI sectors frequently rely on open-source packages to build applications quickly. The npm and PyPI ecosystems are particularly attractive to attackers because they are widely used and often trusted without thorough security vetting. TrapDoor exploits this trust, turning routine dependency installations into a serious security risk.

The theft of MetaMask or Phantom wallet keys could result in the loss of cryptocurrency holdings. Similarly, compromised SSH keys and GitHub tokens could allow attackers to inject further malicious code into production environments

#BILL: Human-AI Collaboration Network Developed ecosystem’ based on crypto has sprung up for AI agents: Report
Artificial intelligence agents settling payments have gone from concept to reality in the last 12 months, with $73 million settled across 176 million transactions from May last year through April 2026, according to crypto investment firm Keyrock.

In a report released Thursday, written in collaboration with crypto exchange Coinbase and the blockchain Tempo, Keyrock researcher Ben Harvey said that “in the past 12 months, machine-to-machine payments have gone from concept to a developed ecosystem.”

“Agents have settled over $73 million across 176 million transactions, and incumbents have deployed more than $8 billion in acquisitions to secure their position in what is emerging as an entirely new payment stack,” Harvey added.
AI agents are becoming increasingly popular among crypto users. Some crypto executives have speculated that AI agents settling transactions could drive adoption and transaction volumes, with Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire predicting in January that billions of AI agents will operate with stablecoins on users' behalf within five years.

Traditional payment rails too slow and expensive

By the end of the first quarter this year, there were more than 104,000 agents registered across 15 or more directories and registries, according to Harvey. The average transaction size was about 31 cents.

“That number tells you almost everything about why traditional payment rails can’t serve this market. A fixed processing fee of roughly 30 cents per transaction makes sub-dollar payments uneconomical. An agent paying three cents for a weather API call can’t route through Visa,” Harvey said.

“Stablecoins won the settlement layer for machine commerce almost by default; they were the only instrument that could handle sub-dollar transactions without the economics collapsing.”

SEC postpones plan allowing 'innovation exemption' for tokenized stocks: Report
The US Securities and Exchange Commission has reportedly postponed its plan to allow trading of tokenized stocks after stock exchange officials raised concerns over how the plan would be implemented.

Bloomberg reported on Friday, citing sources familiar with the matter, that the SEC’s “innovation exemption” for crypto-based stocks was expected to be released during the week, with SEC staffers having already reviewed a draft of the tokenized stock trading proposal.

The SEC has reportedly received input from hundreds of market participants on how to best implement the rules, but it has not made a decision to change its proposal.

Under the SEC’s proposal, platforms offering tokenized stocks would need to guarantee investors receive the same rights as traditional shareholders, including dividends and voting rights.

Market participants reportedly raised concerns to the SEC over the potential proliferation of unauthorized third parties issuing tokens without the consent of public companies and how ownership would be verified on semi-pseudonymous blockchains.

The SEC has been more open to crypto-powered financial products under the Trump administration, which has coincided with Wall Street having a growing interest in tokenization and stablecoins.

Data from RWA.xyz shows that $34 billion worth of real-world assets have been tokenized, including $1.55 billion in tokenized equities, but adoption has lagged expectations by Citibank and McKinsey, which respectively predicted in 2022 and 2024 that tokenization would become a multi-trillion-dollar market by 2030.
