About one-tenth of US adults said they used or invested in crypto in 2025, the highest level in three years, according to a Federal Reserve report on the economic well-being of households.

Roughly 10% used crypto for any reason, up from 2023 and 2024, according to the Fed report published on Wednesday.

Despite the rise, 2025’s figures still fell short of crypto adoption seen in 2021, when 12% of Americans reported having used crypto for any reason.

Expanding Bitcoin (BTC) and crypto into everyday payments has been a key focus area for many American payment companies, including Jack Dorsey’s Block, which has enabled Bitcoin and stablecoin payments for over 800,000 US-based merchants.

Lightspark, a Bitcoin Lightning Network startup founded by former PayPal President David Marcus, is also looking to push Bitcoin payments into the mainstream.

Around 9% of respondents said they use crypto as an investment vehicle, while just 2% used it for payments, and 1% used it to send money to family or friends.

Crypto usage was notably higher among the unbanked, with 6% using crypto for transactions compared to 2% of banked adults. Approximately 6% of Americans were unbanked in 2025.

More than 25% of those who used crypto for payments said the business expressed a preference for payment in crypto, citing advantages such as speed, privacy and lower costs.

Less than 10% of businesses expressed a preference for crypto payments due to it being “safer” than banks or because of a lack of trust in the traditional banking system.

The Federal Reserve has adopted a relatively cautious view on crypto over the years, particularly under the leadership of Jerome Powell, whose term came to an end on Friday.Powell is set to be replaced by Kevin Warsh, who was voted in by the Senate on Wednesday.

But looking deeper into the data, we see the market facing two very distinct scenarios: either Strategy's buying power will trigger a supply shock driving prices to six-figure marks, or this will be a liquidity trap if the flow of capital from STRC stock suddenly dries up. Smart Money is closely watching Strategy's $75,700 cost basis; this is the most important psychological support for the entire market in 2026. If the price stays firm above this level, the uptrend will continue; otherwise, pressure from institutional portfolio exits could wipe out all growth achievements.

The dark side of the issue is that when miners and retail investors look at Strategy's buy orders to act, they can easily fall into a state of complacency. Don't forget that this giant buys with financial leverage and has a risk tolerance far different from that of an individual investor.

Bitcoin has pulled back sharply from $82,000 to $76,800 in a matter of days. On the surface, a 6% decline after a strong rally from $60,000 can look like a routine pullback. However, the market data underneath the price action suggests otherwise.

Three signals are pointing in the same direction, and together they paint a picture of a market that's fearing a deeper price slide.

The 11 U.S.-listed spot bitcoin ETFs have shed over $1.5 billion since May 7, according to SoSoValue data. Monday's withdrawals alone hit $648 million, the highest single-day tally since January 29 and the second time in a week that daily outflows have exceeded $600 million. Last Tuesday, investors yanked $635 million from the same funds.

The pace of redemptions has more than offset the inflows seen at the start of the month, resulting in a net outflow of $396 million since May 1. Routine corrections usually don't see sustained institutional selling of this magnitude. This one has.

The second signal is Cumulative Volume Delta (CVD), which measures whether buyers or sellers are driving the price action. It does this by tracking the net volume of aggressive market orders (buy/sell) rather thanaaa passive limit orders.

When CVD turns deeply negative, it means sellers are actively hitting bids rather than waiting patiently for buyers. And it has flipped negative in both spot and futures markets.

During the sell-off, aggregate spot CVD across major exchanges has dropped from $16.9 million to minus $126.2 million, according to Glassnode, which described the move as a "pronounced shift toward aggressive selling."

The same pattern is playing out in the perpetual futures market, where CVD has fallen sharply to negative $368.5 million, confirming that futures traders are selling just as aggressively as their spot market counterparts.
