Pantera Capital Leads $52.5 Million World Foundation Raise as AI Identity Race Accelerates
The nonprofit behind the World protocol, backed by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, announced the new raise on July 24, 2026, three years to the day after the network’s production launch. Pantera Capital led the round. Bain Capital Crypto, Eightco Holdings, Selini Capital, and Susquehanna Crypto also bought in.

Every token sold carries a 12-month lockup. World Foundation said the sale was a direct purchase of market-priced $WLD, with no tokens sold on public exchanges.

Where the Money Goes

The funds will expand World ID for businesses, individual users and artificial intelligence (AI) agents. The foundation is shifting its focus from building out the network to embedding it in the platforms people already use.

The tokens carry no equity, profit rights or ownership stake in Tools for Humanity, the for-profit company that builds the project’s hardware and software. The lockup limits how much new supply can hit the market in the near term.

Onchain data suggested the sale involved about 217 million $WLD near $0.24 a token, a discount to the market price of roughly $0.37 at the time. The foundation described the deal as market-priced.

A Growing Investor Base

The raise follows a $135 million private sale in May 2025 that included A16z and Bain Capital Crypto. Combined with earlier funding, the project’s cumulative capital raised now stands near $492.5 million.

Eightco Holdings already holds about 283 million $WLD tokens, close to 8% of the circulating supply, after raising capital for a dedicated $WLD treasury strategy. Eightco board member Tom Lee said World’s technology is among the most important tools for verifying human interaction online. Lee’s digital asset treasury (DAT) firm Bitmine also holds a stake in Eightco shares.

The crypto market has shown a dynamic performance throughout the past week. Hence, over the past 7 days, some noteworthy crypto assets have experienced impressive gains. As per the data from CoinMarketCap, Audiera ($BEAT), Shiba Inu ($SHIB), and Venice Token ($VVV) have dominated the list of weekly crypto gainers. Following that, Pump.fun ($PUMP), Uniswap ($UNI), Monero ($XMR), JUST ($JST), Aave ($AAVE), and MemeCore ($M) are also among the top performers.

Crypto investors are seeing a growing gap between how blockchain networks perform as businesses and how their tokens trade. Market data showed Maker’s Sky generated $210.9 million in revenue over the past 90 days, the highest among major protocols, even as its $SKY token fell 33.5%.

The disconnect stretched beyond the largest projects. Spark’s token dropped 55.3% while its revenue slipped just 2.6%, and Bittensor increased revenue 25.4% to $3.3 million despite its token losing 24.7%. The figures suggest protocol revenue is becoming less closely tied to token prices, even as investors continue to judge projects largely by market sentiment.
Sky Shows the Widest Fundamental Gap

Sky posted the strongest quarterly revenue growth among the 10 largest crypto projects, with revenue rising 74.2% from the previous quarter. Despite that performance, its $SKY token fell 24.5% over the past 90 days and 27.3% over the past year, creating the widest revenue-to-price gap in the group.

Investor Defi Rocketeer described $SKY as one of the clearest examples of strong protocol fundamentals failing to lift a token’s price. The analyst noted that Sky generated $420.6 million in trailing 12-month revenue, while annual revenue increased 11.2%.

Much of Sky’s income comes from stability fees and yields tied to real-world assets and US Treasuries. Even so, the stronger revenue has yet to translate into sustained gains for the token.

Bitcoin Recovery Sparks New Crypto Bull Market Debate

Crypto markets are showing early signs of renewed strength, with bitcoin gaining while technology stocks declined, according to Bitwise Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan.

In a July 22 market commentary, Hougan noted on X that bitcoin rose 9% since July 1 while the Nasdaq-100 fell 6%. He also pointed to improving sentiment and stronger ETF flows, while warning that the market has not received a confirmed bottom.

The executive believes the next crypto cycle will focus on the convergence of blockchain technology and traditional finance rather than another cycle driven mainly by speculation. He described:

“The next crypto bull market will be about stablecoins, tokenization, 24/7 trading, instant settlement, and institutional DeFi scaling to the trillions, disrupting finance the way the internet disrupted media and shopping in the early 2000s.”

The Bitwise CIO said blockchain infrastructure offers advantages including faster settlement, global access, and continuous markets. However, he noted that many investors remain focused on whether crypto has recovered instead of preparing for a broader shift in financial markets.

Earlier Bitcoin Outlook Focused on Institutional Demand

Hougan’s latest comments build on his previous view that institutional adoption will drive crypto’s next phase. He has argued that bitcoin ETF demand could tighten available supply as more investors gain exposure through traditional financial products.

The Bitwise executive has also pointed to broader market forces supporting a potential crypto recovery, including improving market structure, institutional participation, and growing demand from traditional investors through nine forces aligning for a crypto bull run.
