Why Bitcoin's 55% profitable supply doesn't confirm BTC's full recovery yet

Bitcoin's improving profitability offers optimism, but historical trends suggest the market has yet to confirm a lasting cycle shift.Bitcoin's [BTC] latest recovery has improved investor profitability, though historical cycle data indicates the market has not yet crossed a decisive turning point.

Profitable supply increased from 46.2% on the 30th of June to 58% on the 21st of July. This was the lowest level in 2026. Over this time, more than 10% of the circulating supply went into realized profits as BTC bounced off the mid-$50,000s to the $60,000s.However, at press time, the metric had retraced back to 55.2%Although previous recoveries in the bear markets were at least 64 percent, previous cycle highs occurred at approximately 69%, 64%, 83%, and 77%. Long-term holders are still accumulating, while short-term holders have continued to sell close to their cost basis with STH SOPR currently at 1.0.This combination suggests that the selling pressure is easing. However, Bitcoin still needs profitability to move through the 60% to 65% range before matching the stronger recovery structure seen in previous cycles. While overall profitability for Bitcoin still hasn't reached levels experienced during prior recovery cycles, current whale trends suggest there is growing conviction below the surface.

As prices rebounded, investors were becoming profitable again after briefly falling into loss. Notably, holders of 100-1,000 BTC moved back into unrealized profit. That shift matters because investors who regain profitability often face a choice between realizing gains and continuing to hold.

Crypto pundit Diana shared fresh liquidation data showing that long traders suffered overwhelming losses during the past 24 hours, reinforcing the risks associated with leveraged trading during periods of heightened volatility.

In her post, Diana wrote, “95% of XRP LONGS JUST GOT VANISHED — Over $3.76 MILLION Liquidated In The LAST 24 Hours. Bears are winning…” The figures attached to her post indicate that the vast majority of forced liquidations came from traders who had bet on XRP’s price moving higher, as only a small percentage affected short positions.

Ongoing capital rotation for Bitcoin (BTC) and other risky assets is igniting a new leap in the market, backed up with incoming regulatory wins. United States stakeholders expect the Clarity Act to attract long-term investment, which will also impact other jurisdictions.

This week saw bear traders stall flash sales as crypto assets across the board reversed trajectory. These assets are now set for a sustained recovery on the heels of macro factors and heavy Wall Street capital in the coming months.

First, digital asset commentators tipped the stock market and fund flows out of Al firms to boost most coins. This week, Bitcoin, Ethereum and XRP recorded huge gains alongside key crypto stocks like Coinbase and American Bitcoin.

FRNT Financial CEO Stephane Ouellette said that there's a chance of a breakout with a decline in Al trades. This downturn is also visible in Al-themed coins influenced by activity in the sector.

"With Bitcoin at the top end of the range, we see the path of least resistance being higher and an elevated likelihood of a breakout of the range as the Al trade slows and the market becomes more comfortable with the path of interest rates"

Inside the EU’s new country-level crypto ban — Here’s why HTX and 13 platforms were targeted

Will the crypto industry survive the new EU sanctions tool?

The European Union (EU) has widened its sanctions targeting Russia by banning Justin Sun-owned HTX and 13 other crypto platforms.

The platforms span the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Panama, Georgia, the Marshall Islands, Kyrgyzstan and Belarus. They include BitPapa, A7 networks and more.
According to the EU Council, these platforms have acted as conduits for blocked Russian entities to move funds and bypass existing sanctions. The transaction ban prohibits EU persons and firms from doing business with these crypto platforms. 

In particular, Justin Sun-owned HTX’s appearance on the sanctioned list is very noteworthy. The exchange was banned by the U.K in May.

To counter possible freezing of funds, HTX moved its reserves to an unknown third party and has been switching hot wallets, making it difficult to conduct sanction screening. 

However, the EU’s aggressive action to ban crypto services in a third country could exert more pressure and signal an evolution of crypto in sanction enforcement.

It suggests capital is rotating into a handful of high-conviction speculative assets rather than flowing “across” the broader memecoin marketNotably, that’s exactly why this setup can cut both ways.

The logic is simple: concentrated capital often strengthens momentum in the near term, but it also makes the rally more fragile. If sentiment shifts, crowded positioning can unwind just as quickly. And as CoinMarketCap noted, derivatives positioning is heating up. According to CoinGlass, Dogecoin’s Open Interest (OI) has risen 7%+ this week. SHIB’s setup looks even more aggressive, with OI surging 60% over the last 24 hours alone.
