Investors are most bearish on the dollar in over a decade, per Bank of America's (BofA) latest survey and that extreme bet could breed bitcoin $BTC$68,266.99 volatility, just not the way crypto bulls have become used to.

BofA's February survey shows investor positioning in the U.S. dollar has fallen to its most negative (bearish) level since at least early 2012, with net exposure at a record underweight. This is driven by concerns over further deterioration in the U.S. labor market, which could prompt the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates.

Since its inception, bitcoin has mostly moved in the opposite direction of the U.S. Dollar Index, rising when the greenback slides and falling when it strengthens. That tracks for two big reasons: As a dollar-denominated asset, a softer buck makes $BTC cheaper to buy and vice versa. Plus, a strong dollar tightens financial conditions globally, hammering risk assets like bitcoin and the reverse holds when it weakens.

So, if history is a guide, the record bearish dollar positioning, a sign of investors aligned for a weaker dollar, could be termed a classic bullish tailwind for bitcoin.

But wait, there's a twist. Since early 2025, and especially lately, bitcoin has developed a weird positive link to the dollar. DXY plunged over 9% last year and another 1% this year. Yet $BTC dropped 6% in 2025 and is down 21% year-to-date. Their 90-day correlation hit 0.60 on Monday, the highest since April 2025, according to data source TradingView.

If that link sticks, a deeper slide in the dollar index may not bode well for bitcoin. But the flip side is a dollar bounce, fueled by a short squeeze, could drag $BTC higher with it.

Congresswoman Maxine Waters, the top Democrat on the House Financial Services Committee, shared on Feb. 11 concerns about the direction of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), including its oversight of digital assets, during a full committee hearing focused on the agency.

Addressing SEC Chair Paul Atkins directly, she stated: “You and I have a very different understanding about what is happening at the SEC.” She continued: “Chairman Atkins said it is ‘a new day for the SEC.’ What did he mean? Did he really mean that this SEC is now putting Wall Street and billionaires first, and America’s investors last?”

Turning specifically to crypto enforcement, Waters asserted that the agency has “dismissed cases and investigations against Trump’s crypto billionaire friends.” She further argued:

Bitcoin’s selloff picked up speed over the past two sessions, with price breaking down through several key technical levels as bearish momentum strengthened.
On the daily chart, BTC slid from the mid-$84,000 range to around $78,700, wiping out roughly $5,400 in value — a 6.4% decline in just two days. The move followed a failed rebound attempt near local resistance, after which sellers quickly stepped back in and drove a decisive continuation to the downside.
Key Levels Give Way
From a technical standpoint, Bitcoin has now broken below its rising support trendline that had been intact since late December. Once that structure failed, price moved swiftly through a cluster of horizontal supports between $86,000 and $82,000, offering little resistance along the way.
BTC has also fallen well below the 50-day EMA, currently near $90,000, which now flips into a clear overhead resistance zone rather than support.
Selling Pressure Intensifies
The breakdown was accompanied by rising volume, confirming strong seller participation. This kind of volume expansion typically points to forced liquidations and rapid deleveraging, rather than a slow, low-interest pullback.
So far, the daily candles show very limited dip-buying, with no obvious reversal signal emerging yet.
Momentum Still Weak
Momentum indicators reflect the pressure. The RSI has dropped toward the mid-20s, placing Bitcoin in deeply oversold territory. While such conditions can trigger short-term relief bounces, they don’t automatically signal that the broader downtrend is over.
What Comes Next?
From a market structure perspective, the next meaningful support zone appears in the low-to-mid $70,000 range, which lines up with prior consolidation areas and the lower boundary of the current descending
