A recent report from Alphractal, an advanced investment and on-chain data analytics platform, reveals that the gap between whale and retail activity has narrowed to levels now lower than those observed in major altcoins.

Historically, Bitcoin has exhibited a more pronounced gap between large holders and smaller users, a phenomenon often indicative of institutional influence. However, the chart suggests a more balanced participation dynamic, even as altcoins continue to display a more pronounced disparity between major players and individual traders.

According to Alphractal, this narrowing of the metric relative to altcoins suggests that large investors or whales are more inclined to close their long positions or open more short positions on BTC compared to altcoins. At the same time, retail investors appear to be moving in the opposite direction, showing heightened interest in long positions on BTC.

Alphractal noted that this divergence is likely driven by investors’ belief that the flagship asset still has more downside potential, while many altcoins have already experienced a significant decline. As a result, it may not make as much sense from the whales’ perspective to continue heavily shorting altcoins. However, this remains the case for Bitcoin.

The $75,000 mark is not just a round number for Bitcoin traders. It sits at the lower band of what analysts call the “traders’ on-chain Realized Price” — a metric that tracks the average price at which active market participants last moved their coins.

According to CryptoQuant head of research Julio Moreno, that band has historically acted as a ceiling during bear markets, and it appears to be doing the same thing now.

Bitcoin tested the $75,000 level three times on Coinbase in a single 24-hour stretch and was turned back each time.

The rally itself has been real. Bitcoin climbed roughly 12% in March, touching a six-week high of around $76,000 on March 17. But momentum has stalled right where analysts warned it might.
