Crypto is the canary in the coal mine for the

quantum computing threat, experts say Quantum computing is a risk factor for every encrypted system on the planet, including major banks. But crypto, due to the way it works, may be the technology that gets tested first.

"Cryptocurrencies are the canary in the coal mine," Eddy Zervigon, CEO of Quantum Xchange, said in an interview with CoinDesk. Zervigon's firm builds infrastructure to shield networks, including financial ones, from quantum-enabled attacks, and he's blunt about where the first casualty is likely to show up.

"That's the first place of attack because of the decentralized nature," Zervigon said. "Once you see it happening there, then you know that someone somewhere has a cryptographically relevant quantum computer."

A cryptographically relevant quantum computer, capable of breaking the elliptic-curve cryptography underpinning the Bitcoin blockchain's signatures, along with the encryption securing bank rails, doesn't exist yet. The consensus estimate for when it will is compressing, not stretching.

"The folks spending billions of dollars, like Microsoft, IBM, and others developing quantum computers, generally believe there will be a commercially relevant, cryptographically relevant quantum computer in the 2029 timeframe," Zervigon said. "That's not me making stuff up. That's based on what people like Arvind Krishna at IBM have said."

The past seven days followed a familiar pattern. Buyers stepped in after last month’s drop to $57,700, driving bitcoin from $64,700 on July 19 to a high of $66,910 on July 21. Sellers then took over, pulling the price back into the low $64,000s by July 25.

Bitcoin’s market capitalization held near $1.28 trillion to $1.3 trillion throughout most of the week. The net move stayed close to flat, with bitcoin down about 1% on some weekly readings, even as the broader July recovery from the year’s low remains in double digits.

Morgan Stanley’s proposed 0.14% ETH and SOL fees could turn the next crypto ETF race into a price fight

Morgan Stanley filed amended registration statements for proposed Ethereum and Solana ETF trusts on June 18, setting a 0.14% annual delegated sponsor fee on both products.

Bloomberg senior ETF analyst Eric Balchunas described the proposed fee as the lowest among ETH and SOL products worldwide.

The ETH trust, expected to trade on NYSE Arca under the ticker MSSE, intends to track ether and staking rewards from a portion of its holdings. The SOL trust (MSOL) intends to stake up to 100% of its Solana.

BlackRock's iShares Ethereum Trust ETF (ETHA) carries a 0.25% sponsor fee, Grayscale's mini Ether (ETH) product sits at 0.15%, Bitwise's Solana staking ETF (BSOL) launched at 0.20%, and Franklin Templeton's Solana ETF (SOEZ) lists a 0.19% net expense ratio.

The filings are preliminary, and the SEC must declare both registration statements effective before shares trade; neither filing has reached that threshold.

Morgan Stanley prices ETH and SOL exposure below rivals

Morgan Stanley's 14 basis points on a crypto ETF is a statement about where the firm expects the institutional allocation conversation to go.

Bitcoin ETFs resolved the access problem for institutions, with BlackRock's IBIT crossing $70 billion in assets under management within 18 months of launch.

The next question for wealth managers and advisors is whether ETH and SOL, packaged cheaply and reliably enough, can occupy a second line in a digital asset sleeve alongside Bitcoin.

Morgan Stanley's 0.14% fee positions those products as portfolio-building blocks before the allocation question has a broadly accepted answer.

The ETH trust intends to stake 50% to 80% of its holdings under normal market conditions, with staking service providers and custodians receiving an expected aggregate 5% of rewards and the trust retaining the remainder.
