Hyperliquid's new deal with Coinbase (COIN) and Circle (CRCL) is shifting stablecoin profits away from issuers and toward crypto trading platforms, a move analysts said could create sustained buying pressure for the $HYPE token while squeezing margins at Circle.

The agreement, announced last Thursday, makes Circle's $USDC stablecoin the official "Aligned Quote Asset" (AQA) on Hyperliquid, the fast-growing perpetual futures exchange. Coinbase will become the treasury deployer for most $USDC on the network, while Circle handles minting, redemptions and cross-chain infrastructure.

While the exact details of the revenue share were not revealed, the AQA frame means that Hyperliquid will receive most — as much as 90% — of the reserve income generated by $USDC deposits on the platform — revenue that historically flowed mainly to stablecoin Circle and Coinbase.

"The more I think about this Coinbase partnership, the more I believe it is Hyperliquid’s biggest announcement all year," Syncracy Capital co-founder Ryan Watkins wrote on X.

Watkins argued the deal fundamentally changes Hyperliquid’s business model because the protocol now captures both trading fees and stablecoin yield.

"Yield sharing enables Hyperliquid’s revenue to scale more directly with deposits, rather than just trading volume," Watkins said. Because deposits tend to remain steadier during downturns than trading activity, the structure could make Hyperliquid’s token buybacks more resilient across market cycles, he added.

With over $5 billion on Hyperliquid currently, the deal could channel between some $135 million and $160 million in revenue for the protocol and buybacks from $USDC yield sharing, Watkins said.

Cryptocurrency analytics company Santiment has shared the projects with the most active developer communities in the yield farming sector, based on 30 days of GitHub data.

According to the company’s published list, yearn.finance ($YFI) topped the list in terms of developer activity, while Aave ($AAVE) and Gearbox Protocol (GEAR) also stood out in the top rankings.

According to Santiment data, some projects rose in the rankings while others declined compared to last month. Yearn.finance, Gearbox Protocol, Katana, and the Ethereum and Arbitrum versions of SushiSwap stood out in particular, showing increased developer activity.

Based on developer activity over the past 30 days, the most prominent projects in the yield farming sector are ranked as follows:

The crypto market is caught between a promising regulatory moment and a deteriorating macro backdrop. The Clarity Act cleared the Senate Banking Committee last week, offering the industry its clearest path yet to a comprehensive U.S. regulatory framework.

But shenanigans in traditional markets, mainly volatility in Treasury notes, swings in the dollar-yen exchange rate and the price of oil, are pointing in the other direction.

For a start, U.S. Treasury yields are not just rising, but looking volatile. The ICE BofA MOVE index, which measures volatility in Treasuries, jumped 14.7% to 79.87 on Friday, its highest level since April 7 and its biggest single-day increase since March 26, according to TradingView data. Treasury notes underpin global finance and serve as the primary collateral in lending markets worldwide. When they swing sharply, it discourages risk-taking and triggers broad-based selling across asset classes.

A second risk is the yen. The Japanese currency has weakened from 155 per dollar to nearly 159 per dollar in recent days, nearing the 160 level that has historically prompted the Bank of Japan (BOJ) to take action to stall the slide. A potential BOJ intervention would strengthen the yen, forcing an unwind of risk-on carry trades funded by yen borrowing.

"USD/JPY at 158 to 159 is edging toward the psychologically important 160 level, where intervention risk increases and crowded yen-carry positions could begin to unwind sharply, potentially draining a key source of global liquidity that has been supportive of risk assets," Singapore-based QCP Capital said in a daily note.

Together, these three risks are a reminder that macro forces can overwhelm even the most positive regulatory catalysts. Right now, macro is winning.
