Bitcoin began as peer-to-peer electronic cash, but the market gave it a different job. Over the past decade, Bitcoin has become crypto’s benchmark investment asset: something to accumulate, custody, borrow against, and measure against. Stablecoins, meanwhile, became the industry’s practical payment rail.

That split made sense. Bitcoin’s volatility, confirmation times, and tax complexity made it awkward for everyday spending, while stablecoins offered the thing merchants and users actually needed: a familiar unit of account that could move quickly across digital rails. Bitcoin became the asset people did not want to spend. Stablecoins became the money they could.

The gap is becoming more visible as stablecoins move deeper into mainstream payment infrastructure. Visa said its stablecoin settlement pilot now supports nine blockchains and had reached a $7 billion annualized settlement run rate as of March 2026. That does not mean stablecoins have solved every payments problem, but it does show which part of crypto is being absorbed most quickly into commercial finance.

Bitcoin is now facing the opposite question. It does not need to prove that it can be held. It needs to prove that it can move in ways that create useful economic activity. More specifically, it raises a question for the companies that secure the network: can miners evolve from passive validators into active participants in Bitcoin’s payment economy?

For most of Bitcoin’s history, miners have had a narrow but essential role: secure the network, validate transactions, and earn block rewards plus transaction fees. Yet block rewards decline with each halving, which means Bitcoin’s long-term economics increasingly depend on whether transaction activity can become a more meaningful source of revenue. That transition is still far from complete.

Withdrawals from crypto exchange BitMart appeared to slow after it announced plans to wind down its operations.

On Monday, blockchain analytics account Lookonchain reported that only 58 wallets withdrew about $805,000 in over 24 hours. It added that the exchange had not processed any withdrawals during the latest eight-hour period it tracked.

X users also continued to report withdrawal difficulties. One user said they received an email stating that a USDT withdrawal had been completed even though the transaction had not been processed and their account displayed an “on-chain withdrawal freeze.” Another user said a $30 test withdrawal remained pending for over 30 minutes. These are individual claims and could not be verified.

BitMart’s ability to return customer funds smoothly will be a key test of its promised “orderly” wind-down and could determine whether declining confidence develops into a broader rush for the exits.

BitMart previously said withdrawals remain available but warned that requests may face additional compliance and security checks, including reviews of customer identities, login devices, withdrawal addresses, trading histories and sources of funds. The exchange may also request proof of identity, address, source of funds or ownership of the receiving wallet.

Cointelegraph reached out to BitMart for comments but did not receive a response before publication.

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission again issued an advisory that signals firms have been straying into cookie-cutter self-certification.

The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission, which has claimed a role as the leading regulator of prediction markets firms run by companies such as Kalshi, Coinbase, Polymarket and Crypto.com, issued an advisory on Friday reminding the businesses that they shouldn't cut corners with far-ranging contract certifications meant to encompass a wide array of events.

The agency said that "broad, template-style certifications should not be submitted," marking the second time in recent months that the regulator has had to warn about overly generalized submissions.

Many of the "designated contract markets" regulated by the CFTC "continue to self-certify event contracts" (in other words, prediction market contracts) as broad templates "without supplying the terms and conditions of each proposed permutation and a concise explanation and analysis with respect to the product’s terms and conditions, the underlying commodity, and the product’s compliance," the agency said.
The regulator said skirting the process can undermine its ability to work out whether the firm "has supplied all information, explanation and analysis required" and has "adequately evaluated the settlement methodology, data sources, and core-principles compliance of all permutations of the contract."

That said, the agency explained that "closely related event contracts may be certified as a class," citing legitimate ways to make consolidated filings with shared exhibits.
