Elliptic also described Grinex as one of the largest venues for exchanging Russian rubles into crypto assets. Elliptic further connected Grinex’s rise to Garantex, a Russian exchange that has been sanctioned by the US Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) and targeted for laundering “hundreds of millions of dollars” associated with ransomware, darknet markets, and state-sponsored hacking groups.  Links Between Grinex And GarantexIn that case, Elliptic worked with the US Secret Service to identify crypto wallets controlled by Garantex, a step that helped enable the freezing of $26 million in stablecoins. According to Elliptic, Grinex is likely to have common ownership and management with Garantex and was created as a response to the sanctions imposed on Garantex. Following this move, Tether’s total Bitcoin reserves now stand at approximately 97,141 BTC, making it the second-largest private holder of Bitcoin, behind Block.one. Among publicly traded companies, Strategy remains the largest corporate holder of BTC.
While Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino said the recent transfer was simply a wallet test, the company has a clear history of steadily accumulating Bitcoin over time. Similar movements have been observed before, including a transfer of 961 BTC last November, which was also moved into its reserve wallet.
Tether’s Bitcoin strategy began taking shape in September 2022 and was later formalized in May 2023, when the company announced plans to allocate 15% of its quarterly net profits into Bitcoin purchases. Since then, its BTC holdings have consistently grown as part of a broader diversification strategy.
Last June, Tether also moved 14,000 BTC from its reserve wallet to an address linked to Twenty One Capital, highlighting ongoing internal reallocations of its holdings.
Overall, this latest transfer appears to align with Tether’s long-term accumulation approach rather than signaling any immediate market shift.
