Crypto hack goes political as Grinex blames ‘Western Grinex, a sanctioned Kyrgyzstan-registered crypto exchange, has disclosed a hack of over one billion rubles.
In an announcement posted to the exchange’s official Telegram channel, the “targeted attack” was attributed to “Western special services,” and is aimed at “causing direct damage to Russia’s financial sovereignty.”

The loss sees Grinex “forced to suspend its operations.”

It says “attempts to destabilize the domestic financial sector have reached a new level – the direct theft of assets of Russian citizens and companies.”

Mitsui & Co. Digital Commodities (MDC), a subsidiary of Japanese trading giant Mitsui & Co., Ltd., its tokenized gold, silver, and platinum asset, Zipangcoin (ZPG), on OP Mainnet, according to a press release shared with The Defiant.

ZPG has been issued under Japan's regulatory framework since 2022 and currently runs on Miyabi, a proprietary private blockchain developed by longtime crypto exchange bitFlyer.

The warning is landing as bitcoin trades near $77,000, having clawed back from a 40% drawdown since its late-2025 peak around $126,000. It also lands three weeks after the April 2 conditional approval of a national trust charter for Coinbase by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. "OCC grants Coinbase conditional approval for a National Trust Bank Charter," Swiss law firm Goldblum & Partners posted on X on April 13, noting that "11 crypto firms now in the federal banking pipeline" and that a new rule, 12 CFR 5.20, "explicitly permits non-fiduciary crypto custody for national trust banks." That regulatory blessing, in a twist, deepens the concentration analysts are now calling out.

The Senate Banking Committee has scheduled Kevin Warsh's confirmation hearing for April 21, while Jerome Powell's current term as chair ends on May 15.

Powell's term as a Fed governor runs until Jan. 31, 2028, and he said last month that if his successor is not confirmed by the time his chairmanship expires, he would serve as chair pro tem until that happens.
