Pakistan Ends Bitcoin and Crypto Banking Ban, Opens Financial System to Licensed Firms

Pakistan has lifted its 2018 crypto banking ban, allowing licensed firms access to banking services under strict regulation while still prohibiting banks from directly holding or trading digital assets.

Pakistan’s central bank has formally reversed its long-standing ban on banking services for cryptocurrency firms, allowing regulated banks to open accounts for licensed virtual asset service providers (VASPs) under a new legal framework.

The decision, announced in a circular by the State Bank of Pakistan and reported by Reuters, follows the enactment of the Virtual Assets Act 2026 and marks the country’s first structured move to integrate digital asset businesses into its formal financial system.

“This is a foundational step in bringing virtual assets into the formal financial system of Pakistan,” said Bilal bin Saqib, chairman of the Pakistan Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority, in an official statement.

Under the new rules, banks can provide basic financial services to crypto firms, but must first verify that the entities are licensed by PVARA. Strict safeguards have been put in place to mitigate financial risks and ensure compliance with anti-money laundering (AML) and counter-terrorism financing standards.

Banks are required to conduct full due diligence, maintain updated risk profiles for VASP clients, and report suspicious transactions to regulators.

They must also ensure that client funds are held in segregated, non-interest-bearing accounts denominated in Pakistani rupees. The commingling of customer and company funds is strictly prohibited.

Bitcoin should prepare now, even if quantum is a 'lab experiment’: Adam Back

Blockstream CEO Adam Back, an early pioneer of the crypto movement, said Bitcoiners should be looking at building quantum-resistant solutions now, even if the threat is still decades away.

“Quantum computing still has a lot to prove. Current systems are essentially lab experiments. I’ve followed the field for over 25 years, and progress has been incremental,” Back said at Paris Blockchain Week on Tuesday.

“That said, Bitcoin should prepare,” Back said, adding that the “safest approach” is to build optional upgrades that allow migration to quantum-resistant cryptography if needed.

Concerns that quantum computers could eventually break blockchain cryptography have fueled industry-wide fear that bad actors could use it to break into crypto wallets, plunging the market into chaos.

Back said in November that the quantum threat is still 20 to 40 years away, while explaining to Bloomberg earlier this month that today’s quantum computers are slower than calculators.

Despite this, his Bitcoin development company, Blockstream, has a dedicated quantum team researching potential threat vectors to the Bitcoin network.

Part of that work has involved implementing hash-based signatures on Blockstream’s Bitcoin layer-2 Liquid Network, Back said at Paris Blockchain Week.

“Preparation is key. Making changes in a controlled way is far safer than reacting in a crisis.”

He added that the Taproot protocol could also support alternative signature schemes on the Bitcoin network without affecting current users.

Trump-linked cryptocurrency project World Liberty Financial is facing harsh criticism from its investors as a new proposal seeks to extend lock-ups on WLFI tokens by up to four years for early supporters.

Tron founder Justin Sun, the largest individual investor in World Liberty, criticized the project in a Wednesday social media post. Sun has been engaging in an extended feud with World Liberty, stemming from the project's decision to freeze his WLFI tokens.

"This proposal is not governance," Sun wrote. "This proposal has been packaged as a 'governance alignment signal' and a 'long-term commitment,' but strip away the packaging and what you have is one of the most absurd governance scams I have ever seen."

The proposal, released Wednesday by World Liberty, seeks to convert 62,282,252,205 WLFI tokens from indefinite lockups to fixed vesting schedules. 

Specifically, the proposal said tokens held by founders, team members, advisors, and partners would face a two-year lock-up followed by a three-year linear vesting period, and would require them to burn 4.5 billion WLFI. 

Meanwhile, early supporters that collectively hold more than 17 billion tokens would face a two-year cliff followed by a two-year linear vesting period — meaning their tokens would be fully distributed by year four. 

"Holders who do not affirmatively accept the new schedule remain locked indefinitely under existing terms," the team wrote.

You can buy a cup of coffee with bitcoin easily enough in the U.S. — and get a tax headache thrown in for free.

The form-filling burden is enough to deter users from using the largest cryptocurrency to pay for real-world transactions, according to the Cato Institute, a libertarian think tank known for its support of free markets, limited government and individual liberty. Abolishing capital gains tax could change that, it said.

"It’s never been easier to use Bitcoin as money," Nicholas Anthony, a research fellow at the institute's Center for Monetary and Financial Alternatives, wrote in a report. "Yet, at the same time, the tax code puts an incredible burden on law-abiding citizens. Something as simple as buying a cup of coffee every day with Bitcoin can result in over 100 pages of tax filings."

That's because the tax system doesn't treat bitcoin as cash at the point of payment. Instead, every transaction is treated as if an asset has been sold just at that moment, triggering capital gains calculations. And the calculations aren't straightforward.

That means figuring out when the bitcoin (or fraction of bitcoin) used in the transaction was originally acquired, how much it cost and the value at the moment it was spent. The difference is then treated as a taxable capital gain or loss.

Then it gets complicated. It's quite possible the BTC was accumulated in several batches rather than a single purchase. So when you paid for the coffee, the coins could have been acquired at different times, each with its own cost basis and purchase price. Those details need to be retrieved, recorded and reported. Every time.

The headache doesn't stop there, because there is always a risk of penalty or audit in case you make a mistake in reporting.
