Bitcoin leverage builds near $75K – Why it could be a BTC bear trap

Bitcoin at a crossroads: Volatility vs accumulation as $75k resistance defines market direction.
Normally, mixed signals tend to create a volatility loop as momentum builds on speculation.

Looking at Bitcoin [BTC], it seems to be playing out the same way. According to CoinGlass, Open Interest (OI) has jumped back to early February levels, crossing $55 billion, the biggest spike since the war started. But back in February, BTC was trading above $75k, while this time it’s still struggling below that key resistance.

This divergence suggests leverage is building up faster than spot price strength, which typically leads to elevated short-term volatility. In this kind of environment, calling a Bitcoin bottom therefore looks a bit premature, and on-chain metrics seem to support that view as well.

The Puell Multiple is one of those indicators that looks at miner revenue. Historically, every major BTC bear market bottom has lined up with the Puell Multiple dropping into the green “undervalued” zone.

However, as the chart shows, Bitcoin hasn’t entered that bottoming box yet, which suggests the market may still be in a transitional phase rather than a confirmed cycle bottom. Combined with the post-halving trend, analysts are also pointing out that BTC’s 4-year cycle still seems to be playing out in a pretty textbook way.

Because of that, some are eyeing Q4 2026 as a potential bottoming window, with downside scenarios clustering around the $40k region. However, “smart money” doesn’t seem to fully align with that narrative, suggesting traders are positioning more dynamically rather than strictly following cycle-driven setups.

In short, the current setup around Bitcoin’s $75k resistance splits the market.

Bitcoin may be entering a phase of selling pressure. After hitting a low near $60,000 on February 5th, the price of Bitcoin consolidated for over two months, slowly climbing to around the $70,000 mark. Meanwhile, the Middle East conflict has driven oil prices well above $100 per barrel, creating significant uncertainty in the macroeconomic situation.

Data from CheckonChain suggests that selling pressure is beginning to ease. Realized daily losses are currently around $400 million, still higher than previous years, but trending downwards in recent weeks.

Data shows that actual losses surged to $2 billion on November 21st and February 5th, reaching levels unseen in years and exceeding those during the 2022 bear market.

CheckonChain stated, "The spot market is shifting from aggressive selling to net buying pressure, with both realized profits and losses declining."


Data from Glassnode also corroborates this trend. Based on a seven-day moving average, daily realized profits are around $300 million, near a twelve-month low.  This indicates that investors who bought Bitcoin at $60,000 are now slightly profitable and beginning to take profits.

Meanwhile, according to Glassnode data, the actual profit/loss ratio has risen to 1.4, the highest level since January. This metric compares the token value of profitable trades with the token value of losing trades, indicating that actual profits now exceed losses.

These indicators suggest that selling pressure in the market is easing, and Bitcoin may be nearing the end of its selling cycle.
