Crypto market crash today: Here's why altcoins and BTC are going down

The crypto market is crashing today, with most altcoins being in the red.

Bitcoin has formed a bearish flag pattern, pointing to more downside.

A crypto market crash is underway today, with Bitcoin and popular altcoins being in the red. Bitcoin price dropped to $76,000 from last week's high of $77,000. Some of the top laggards in the industry were altcoins like RaveDAO, MemeCore, LayerZero, Aave, and Siren.

RaveDAO price crashed by over 95% in the last 24 hours, while the other four were down by over 10% in the same period. As a result, the market capitalization of all tokens dropped by 2.5% to $2.58 trillion.

$606K Bitcoin from Bitfinex hack on the move: Is the U.S. preparing to sell?

The U.S. government moved $606K in Bitcoin to Coinbase Prime on Thursday, the 16th of April.

Although it was not clear whether the transfer was meant for a sell-off or custody purposes, similar past moves were associated with FUD and bearish sentiment.

According to Arkham data, this was part of the 94,643 BTC seized from the 2016 Bitfinex hack.

But the transfer has raised more questions than market sell-off fears. 

In early 2025, the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia ordered the stolen funds to be returned to Bitfinex, which was identified as the primary victim.

Nearly a year later, the seized funds, worth over $7 billion at current prices, have not been returned to Bitfinex. 

However, the delay may be associated with complex legal proceedings associated with unwinds of such massive magnitude. If so, then the transfer may likely be for custody purposes for distribution rather than a government sell-off

Bitcoin network activity just hit an 8-year low — has Wall Street replaced retail in the market?

Bitcoin's network just recorded its lowest activity in eight years, and the price has barely flinched.

CryptoQuant flagged that active $BTC addresses hit their lowest level since 2016 on Apr. 8. At the same time, Glassnode's latest 24-hour reading puts active addresses at 661,313, a number that, set against a price near $78,000, produces one of the more uncomfortable charts in recent crypto history.

The reading that quiet networks are quiet markets misses what has changed structurally. A growing share of Bitcoin exposure now trades without leaving any footprint on the base layer.

BlackRock's IBIT delivers Bitcoin exposure through exchange-traded shares, and CME's Bitcoin futures settle in cash. A fund manager rotating into Bitcoin through either vehicle never touches a wallet, never opens an address, never appears in Glassnode's address count.

XRP price right now is not neutral, it is trending down, and the chart makes that pretty clear, because price is sitting below the 50, 100, and 200-day averages, all pointing lower, which is basically the definition of a market that has not bottomed yet.

Volume backs that up too. You had a spike during the selloff, then participation faded, which means this is not accumulation, it is just a quieter downtrend. The fact that $1.30 keeps holding only tells you buyers are defending, not that they are strong enough to push price higher.

If XRP can reclaim $1.50 and actually hold it, that is the first real sign of strength and a potential shift in trend. Until then, every bounce is still just a bounce inside a downtrend.

If $1.30 breaks, the floor disappears, and there is not much support underneath, which is where things can accelerate lower quickly.

What makes it heavier is the on-chain side. Most holders are underwater, MVRV is sitting at levels last seen during major market stress, and supply in profit is low, which usually means momentum is still bearish, not about to flip.
Add to that the fact XRP is already down around 30% over the past year, and this is not just a pullback, it is a sustained downtrend that has not shown a real reversal signal yet.

So the real takeaway is this, the market is compressing, but in a downtrend, and unless something shifts that structure, the odds still lean toward continuation, not a sudden recovery.

Bitcoin surged to $78,000 after Iran briefly reopened the Strait of Hormuz, then fell back to $76,000 when the strait closed again within 24 hours.

The rally triggered $762 million in crypto liquidations, with $593 million wiping out short positions.

Spot Bitcoin ETFs pulled in nearly $1 billion in weekly inflows — their best week since January.

Morgan Stanley launched a Bitcoin Trust fund, which already holds $120 million in assets after just six trading days.

Ether, XRP, BNB, and Solana all posted weekly gains despite the weekend pullback.

Bitcoin had a wild week driven by geopolitical headlines out of the Middle East. The price swung sharply in both directions as news around the Strait of Hormuz changed fast.

On Friday, Iran’s foreign minister announced the Strait of Hormuz was reopened to commercial shipping for the duration of a ceasefire. U.S. President Donald Trump backed the claim, saying Iran had agreed to an “unlimited” suspension of its nuclear program.

Bitcoin jumped above $78,000 on the news. Oil markets moved the other way, with Brent crude falling nearly 10% to around $85 per barrel.

The breakout triggered one of the biggest short squeezes of 2026. Data from CoinGlass shows $762 million in total liquidations across 168,336 traders. Short positions made up $593 million of that, with bitcoin shorts alone accounting for $381 million.

Funding rates on bitcoin perpetuals had been negative for weeks, meaning shorts were paying a premium to hold their positions. The Hormuz headline was the spark that flipped that setup.
