JPMorgan says bitcoin and gold ETFs show sharp flow divergence since Iran war

The largest spot gold ETF, GLD, has seen outflows of about 2.7% of assets, while the largest spot bitcoin ETF, IBIT, has recorded inflows of around 1.5% of assets since the Iran war erupted, JPMorgan analysts said.

They also noted signs of bitcoin volatility compressing as institutional ownership deepens and market liquidity improves.

Bitcoin and gold exchange-traded funds have seen sharply diverging flows since the Iran war erupted late last month, highlighting shifting investor positioning between the two assets, according to JPMorgan analysts.

The largest gold ETF, SPDR Gold Shares (GLD), has seen outflows equal to roughly 2.7% of assets under management since the war, while the largest spot bitcoin ETF, BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT), recorded inflows of about 1.5% of assets over the same period, JPMorgan analysts led by managing director Nikolaos Panigirtzoglou said in a Wednesday report.

Bitcoin Losing The 50-Week SMA Signals Structural Shift
During the previous cycle, Bitcoin peaked in 2021 before eventually falling below the 50-week simple moving average (SMA). That breakdown marked a turning point in the broader market structure. After losing the level, price entered a short consolidation phase where a relief rally briefly developed, but the recovery failed to reclaim the lost structure. The weakness ultimately extended into the prolonged decline that defined the 2022 bear market.

A similar sequence is now visible following the projected 2026 cycle top. According to @_cryptflow_ on X, Bitcoin recently moved beneath the 50-week SMA after peaking earlier in the cycle. This indicator has historically served as a major dividing line between sustained bullish momentum and broader downtrends, meaning its loss often signals a shift in the market’s underlying strength.

The chart also outlines a comparable reaction after the breakdown. In both cycles, price stabilized temporarily after slipping below the moving average and attempted a recovery. However, those rebounds failed to reclaim the lost level, leaving the broader downward structure intact.

Ethereum ($ETH) founder Vitali Buterin, who gained attention for donating altcoins sent to him as gifts, recently spoke about the $SHIB tokens he donated.

Accordingly, Vitalik Buterin shared a tweet about the donations he has made over the past five years. These donations include numerous popular memecoins, including $SHIB.

In 2021, Buterin shared details of a donation, stating that he had donated the SHIBs that the mysterious Shiba Inu founder, Ryoshi, had sent him.

Buterin stated that in 2021 he donated some of these SHIBs to an organization called the Future of Life Institute (FLI), but added that he no longer shares the same views as that organization.

In a statement from his X account, Buterin said that his $500 million donation to FLI in 2021 was used for political advocacy, deviating from the initially proposed technical roadmap.

“In 2021, I bought a large amount of $SHIB and other Dogecoins because the creators used the phrase “we own half of our Vitalik supply” as a marketing tactic and wanted to be “the next Dogecoin.”

I felt that this was definitely a bubble, that it would burst quickly and the price would drop drastically, so I sold as much as I could in $ETH and donated it. I sent half to Crypto Relief and the other half to FLI.

…However, the situation has changed significantly since 2021, and its political aspects have emerged….”

Buterin stated that he had initially thought his $SHIB donation to FLI would generate a profit of around $10-25 million, but they had managed to achieve a profit of approximately $500 million.
