Coinbase and Apex Group Bring Bitcoin Yield Fund to Base
The share class uses the ERC-3643 permissioned token standard, which restricts access to verified institutional and accredited investors.
Coinbase has tokenized a share class of its Bitcoin Yield Fund on the Base blockchain, partnering with financial services firm Apex Group to handle on-chain compliance and transfer functions.

Apex announced Thursday that the tokenized share class is structured to interact with compatible platforms, wallets, and infrastructure while maintaining regulatory compliance. Coinbase Asset Management president Anthony Bassili said the product integrates "identity and eligibility at the token level," embedding compliance checks directly into the token rather than relying on external controls.

The share class uses the ERC-3643 permissioned token standard, which restricts access to verified institutional and accredited investors. It is currently available only to eligible investors outside of the U.S., with Coinbase stating plans to launch a U.S.-facing tokenized share class in the future.

Apex serves as the on-chain transfer agent for the fund, responsible for managing token ownership records, enforcing transfer and compliance rules, and maintaining a full transaction history on Base. The structure follows a broader trend of asset managers bringing fund products onto public blockchains in search of lower settlement costs and continuous trading availability.

Asset managers such as BlackRock, Fidelity Investments, and Franklin Templeton have already launched tokenized funds on-chain. The Coinbase fund adds a yield-bearing Bitcoin product to that growing list, targeting annual returns of 4% to 8% in Bitcoin terms for the non-U.S. version.
