Crypto Winter Is Coming, Says CoinGecko

The cryptocurrency market extended its decline in Q1 2026, transitioning into what CoinGecko describes as a sustained “crypto winter,” with total market capitalization falling 20.4% to $2.4 trillion.

According to the recent report, the $622 billion contraction marks a second consecutive quarterly decline, leaving the market roughly 45% below its October 2025 peak.

Much of the downturn occurred between mid-January and early February, coinciding with the nomination of Kevin Warsh as the next Federal Reserve Chair, signaling a potentially more hawkish monetary policy environment.

Market decline meets flight to stability

While the broader market weakened, stablecoins showed resilience. Total stablecoin market capitalization rose slightly by $1.6 billion to $309.9 billion, reinforcing their role as a liquidity anchor during periods of volatility.

Tether, however, recorded its first notable supply decline since Q2 2022, falling 1.6% to $184.1 billion, though it maintained a dominant 59% market share.

The divergence highlights a broader shift in capital allocation, with investors moving toward lower-risk assets while reducing exposure to more volatile segments of the market.

In terms of trading activity, Solana remained the leading chain for spot trading during the quarter, holding a 30.6% share despite a 26.5% drop in volume.

However, momentum shifted toward Ethereum in March, with Ethereum overtaking Solana to capture a 27% share compared to Solana’s 26%.

The Catalysts Behind BTC's ResurgenceCommenting on the market reaction, Matt Mena, senior crypto research strategist at 21Shares, told Bloomberg that the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz is the "risk-on signal" global markets have been waiting for. In his view, removing what he described as one of the most significant geopolitical choke points has helped "uncork" a larger wave of liquidity and investor confidence, supporting demand across risk assets-including digital currencies. One notable driver is institutional buying: Strategy (previously MicroStrategy) has acquired $2.6 billion in Bitcoin during the past two weeks. According to Bohan Jiang, a senior derivatives trader at FalconX, this has helped "underpin" the market, providing additional support as prices rebound. Still, investors are now looking for clarity on how far the rally can extend. What's Next For Bitcoin? Geopolitical tensions took another turn on April 18 as Iran announced it has reasserted control over the Strait of Hormuz — one of the world’s most critical energy corridors.
In response, U.S. President Donald Trump pushed back firmly, stating that Iran “cannot coerce” the United States. Speaking during a White House media briefing, Trump struck a somewhat balanced tone — acknowledging that ongoing discussions between the two countries are “very good” and progressing “very smoothly,” while also warning against any attempt to use the strait as leverage.
“We are talking to them… they want to block the strait again, but Iran cannot coerce us,” Trump said, hinting that further developments could emerge before the end of the day.
Meanwhile, Iran signaled a much tougher stance on the ground. A spokesperson for the Khatam al-Anbiya Air Defense Headquarters stated that due to what it described as repeated U.S. violations of commitments, Iran has restored full control over the strait. The area, according to Iranian officials, is now under strict supervision by its armed forces.
This dual narrative — diplomatic optimism paired with military assertiveness — highlights the fragile balance currently shaping U.S.–Iran relations. While both sides are engaged in dialogue, actions on the ground suggest neither is willing to ease strategic pressure just yet.
Given that nearly 20% of the world’s oil supply passes through the Strait of Hormuz, even the slightest disruption or escalation can ripple across global markets.

Over the past four consecutive days, Aerodrome Finance [$AERO] has been experiencing an upward trend, which has continued into the weekend.

$AERO is up 13% over the past seven days, with hype growing amid the upcoming upgrade to make the platform multichain. How will this move affect holder revenue, TVL, and the price action of $AERO?

Impact on holders’ revenue and TVL

Aerodrome Finance is built and fully operates on a single chain, which is Base. However, the team announced they would be launching a cross-chain decentralized exchange (DEX) in July, which is expected to improve revenue among other metrics.

Even as it operates on a single chain, the platform led in terms of holders’ revenue over the past month.

Aerodrome brought in $7.4 million a month for its holders, according to DefiLlama. This was more than double that of Uniswap [UNI], which operates on 43 chains with a reading of $3.3 million.

Hyperliquid [HYPE], which also operates on a single chain, followed $AERO with $1.37 million. PancakeSwap [CAKE], which is built on BNB Chain but accommodates about 10 chains, and Pharaoh Exchange and Raydium [RAY] made it into the list of top 6.

Such a move to upgrade the platform to a multichain DEX is set to expand holder revenue as the user base increases.

Moreover, the Total Value Locked (TVL) on Base Chain may continue growing more rapidly with this launch. Currently, the TVL is approaching $5 billion since launch.
