The Human Rights Foundation’s Freedom Tech program released a new playbook for movements that are learning to rely on Bitcoin when hostile governments weaponize banks and payment networks against them.

Titled “Bitcoin for Nonprofits: A Guide To Help Your Movement Achieve Financial Freedom,” the publication targets civil society organizations, grassroots groups, and activist networks that face frozen accounts, blocked wires, and weaponized compliance as part of everyday operations. It lays out a practical model for treating Bitcoin not as a speculative asset, but as parallel financial infrastructure when traditional rails fall under state control.

Bernstein: Bitcoin miners becoming critical suppliers in AI infrastructure


Bernstein says miners control 27 GW of planned power and $90 billion in AI deals, giving them a strategic edge as electricity becomes the main constraint on data center growth.Bitcoin miners are emerging as an important part of the AI infrastructure supply chain because they control large amounts of power capacity and data center real estate that are increasingly difficult to secure, according to a new research note from Bernstein.

Analysts Gautam Chhugani, Mahika Sapra, Sanskar Chindalia and Harsh Misra estimate that publicly traded Bitcoin miners control more than 27 gigawatts of planned power capacity and have announced more than $90 billion in AI-related agreements covering 3.7 gigawatts with hyperscalers, neocloud providers and chipmakers.

An April 29 research brief from RAND said that it expects the US will add approximately 82 GW of additional net available capacity by 2030.According to Bernstein, access to electricity, rather than chips, has become the primary bottleneck for scaling AI data centers. Utility providers can take more than four years to approve new grid connections, even in data center-friendly states such as Texas.

“The median waiting time to secure a GW of power is nothing less than ~50 months across states, and even in politically friendly states such as Texas, the utility is following a batch review process to navigate the interconnect queue and resource load,” the analysts wrote.

Growing regulatory scrutiny and local opposition to large-scale data centers are adding to those delays, giving Bitcoin miners an advantage because they already operate grid-connected sites and have experience managing high-density computing facilities.

Operators dedicated to digital mining responded by reconfiguring their facilities to transform into tech service providers. The mining industry registered contractual commitments linked to AI totaling over $90 billion, covering approximately 3.7 gigawatts of power capacity. Documentation analyzed by Bernstein reveals that one-third of these contracts were signed directly with major global tech corporations, while the remaining two-thirds correspond to so-called “neoclouds” or independent computing providers.

An example of this trend is seen in the firm IREN, which finalized a deal with Nvidia valued at $3.4 billion, including a $2.1 billion equity investment from the chipmaker for the deployment of graphics processing units (GPUs). On the other hand, Riot Platforms ratified an AI colocation contract with semiconductor company AMD. Sector companies such as Core Scientific and HUT 8 also maintain active agreements with corporate clients in the cloud computing segment.

The financial institution Bernstein maintains an outperform rating for four mining firms evaluated in its report: IREN, with a target price set at $100; Riot Platforms, with a target of $25; CleanSpark, with a target of $24; and Core Scientific, placed at an estimated price of $24.
