Adam Back Pushes for Optional Upgrades to Quantum-Proof Bitcoin

The Blockstream CEO’s approach contrasts with BIP-361, a proposal that would implement mandatory freezes of quantum-vulnerable Bitcoin.

Blockstream CEO Adam Back advocated for optional quantum-resistant Bitcoin upgrades at Paris Blockchain Week on Wednesday, a day after a group of Bitcoin developers pushed for a mandatory freeze on quantum-vulnerable Bitcoin.

"Preparation is key. Making changes in a controlled way is far safer than reacting in a crisis," Back said at the conference. He also emphasized Bitcoin's proven emergency coordination capabilities, noting that "bugs have been identified and fixed within hours. When something becomes urgent, it focuses attention and drives consensus."

His approach contrasts with that of BIP-361, a proposal authored by Jameson Lopp and five other developers that would phase out quantum-vulnerable addresses over five years. The proposal, updated in Bitcoin's official repository on April 15 under the title "Post Quantum Migration and Legacy Signature Sunset," would implement a phased soft fork ultimately freezing coins that do not migrate—including the holdings of Bitcoin’s pseudonymous creator, Satoshi Nakamoto.

The intervention highlights a deepening split among Bitcoin developers around how to address the looming threat of “Q-Day”—the moment when a quantum computer with sufficient power to break the encryption used by Bitcoin emerges. Recent research from Google and Caltech suggests quantum computers capable of breaking the cryptocurrency's security may arrive within years rather than decades.

The debate has been sharpened by accelerating progress in quantum computing. Google Quantum AI published research last month showing that quantum computers may break elliptic curve cryptography with fewer than 1,200 logical qubits.

Bitcoin miner HIVE lines up $75 million note offering to fund AI infrastructure expansion

HIVE Digital Technologies announced a private offering of $75 million in 0% exchangeable senior notes due 2031 to fund GPU procurement, data center expansion, and general corporate purposes.

The company also received conditional approval from the Toronto Stock Exchange, with shares expected to transition from the TSX Venture Exchange to the TSX around April 30.

HIVE Digital Technologies (HIVE) plans to offer $75 million of 0% exchangeable senior notes due 2031, as the publicly traded bitcoin miner moves to expand its artificial intelligence infrastructure and data center footprint.

The notes will be issued to qualified investors by HIVE Bermuda 2026 Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary. Net proceeds are expected to support general corporate purposes and capital investment, including the purchase of graphics processing units and data center expansion, the company said in a statement on Wednesday.

Per the statement, the issuer also expects to grant initial purchasers a 13-day option to acquire up to an additional $15 million of the notes. The securities will not bear regular interest and will mature in 2031. Under certain conditions, the notes can be exchanged into cash, HIVE common shares, or a combination of both at the issuer’s election once final pricing terms and the initial exchange rate are determined. 

In connection with the transaction, HIVE intends to fund capped call transactions using cash on hand. The issuer may use a portion of the net proceeds to reimburse HIVE for the cost of those transactions, the company said, noting that the capped call transactions are designed to reduce potential economic dilution of common shares upon exchange of any notes or offset cash payments the company could be required to make in excess of principal, ....

Charles Schwab to Launch Spot Bitcoin Trading for Retail Clients

Charles Schwab has unveiled additional details about its plan to launch spot bitcoin trading through its new platform, Schwab Crypto™.

Charles Schwab announced further details and plans in their attempt to launch direct spot bitcoin trading through its new platform, Schwab Crypto™, signaling a major step by one of the country’s largest brokerage firms into the digital asset market. 

The feature will roll out in phases over the coming weeks and will allow retail clients to buy and sell bitcoin and ethereum through existing Schwab platforms, the bank said. 

The move gives millions of Schwab clients the ability to trade bitcoin alongside traditional holdings such as stocks, ETFs, and mutual funds. Clients will access Schwab Crypto through Charles Schwab Premier Bank, SSB, which will act as custodian for the digital assets. 

Blockchain infrastructure provider Paxos will handle sub-custody and trade execution under a federally regulated trust structure.

“Clients want to conduct more of their financial lives at Schwab,” said Jonathan Craig, Head of Retail Investing. “With Schwab Crypto, they can trade digital assets within their existing accounts while drawing on the service, research, and tools they rely on.”
At launch, Schwab Crypto will enable direct trading in bitcoin and ethereum, which together represent about three-quarters of global crypto market capitalization. 

Schwab will charge a transaction fee of 75 basis points on the dollar value of each trade, placing its pricing at the low end of the brokerage industry. Over time, the firm plans to add more cryptocurrencies and enable transfer capabilities for deposits and withdrawals.

Schwab said its platform will integrate digital assets across Schwab.com, the Schwab Mobile App, and the thinkorswim® trading suite.
