Crypto founder Joe McCann’s passport is sitting with Zanzibar police. He isn’t going anywhere until they get answers.

Authorities Hold McCann Pending Autopsy
Tanzanian police are questioning McCann, founder of the crypto hedge fund Asymmetric, after his fiancée, Ashly Robinson, 31, died on April 9 at a hospital in Zanzibar. Robinson had been rushed there after hotel staff found her unresponsive in her room the day before.

Based on reports from NBC News and CBS News, police have ruled her death a suicide — but they are holding McCann’s passport while they await the results of a formal autopsy.

The couple had been staying at the same hotel when a dispute arose between them. Officials said the two were separated and moved to different rooms following what police described as a “misunderstanding.” Staff later found Robinson in her room with a belt around her neck.

McCann has not commented publicly. He could not be reached for comment.

Family Pushes Back On Suicide Ruling
Robinson’s relatives are not satisfied with the official account. Her sister, Alyssa Endres, told NBC News that “none of this makes sense.”

According to the family, Robinson had recently celebrated her 31st birthday and her engagement to McCann — both of which had happened just days before her death. Endres described her sister as happy at the time.


 Robinson, who went by the name Ashlee Jenae on social media, posted her last photo April 5, showing her feeding a giraffe while she celebrated her birthday.
The family’s challenge to the police ruling adds another layer of uncertainty to a case that is already far from closed. Authorities have not said when the autopsy results are expected or whether additional charges could follow.

As diplomatic talks continue regarding a possible agreement in the ongoing conflict between Iran and the US, noteworthy new statements have emerged from Tehran.

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf strongly criticized the US administration’s rhetoric and sent clear messages regarding the ongoing disputes over the Strait of Hormuz.

Ghalibaf intensified his criticism of Washington, arguing that all seven claims made by US President Trump in a short period of time were “false.” The Iranian official explicitly stated that the Strait of Hormuz would not remain open if the current naval blockade continued.

Ghalibaf also stated that passage through the strait would not be entirely free, arguing that ship traffic would only take place via “designated routes” and “with Iran’s permission.”

On the other hand, developments throughout the day increased uncertainty on the ground. Although Iranian Foreign Ministry officials stated that the strait was open, it was reported that 10 to 20 ships attempted to pass through, but the vast majority turned back. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) reportedly maintained that the strait was still closed.

According to diplomatic sources, the Tehran administration informed mediators that it would restrict ship passage and impose certain fees during the ceasefire process. Iran also categorically denied allegations that it would transfer enriched uranium to the United States.

Ethereum co-founder Joseph Lubin warns of the dangers of AI being controlled by a few big tech firms

Crypto’s next major inflection point is coming from artificial intelligence (AI).

That's according to Consensys CEO and Ethereum co-founder Joseph Lubin. He told CoinDesk that autonomous or semi-autonomous agents can transact, coordinate and verify one another on decentralized networks, using crypto rails as a foundation for machine-driven activity.

Lubin, who will be speaking at Consensus Miami 2026 next month, said he is “sympathetic to the idea that blockchain is for machine intelligences,” but does not see humans being displaced. Instead, increasingly intelligent interfaces will abstract away complexity, allowing users to interact with crypto systems through intent rather than manual inputs. In that model, AI becomes the intermediary layer between people and protocols.

That vision comes with risks. If AI infrastructure remains concentrated among large technology firms, “we could be in trouble,” Lubin warned. He argued that decentralized systems and cryptography will be essential in ensuring accountability, enabling machines to “check on one another” in transparent, verifiable environments.

Within that broader shift, products like MetaMask — a Consensys product — are evolving to reflect the change. Lubin said the wallet is being rebuilt as “a new kind of neobank that you own and control,” part of a transition toward what he described as a “personal money operating system.” AI-powered agents could act on behalf of users, managing assets, executing transactions and navigating a growing decentralized economy. “You can walk around with your personal financial system in your pocket,” he said.

Co-directed by Garrett Patten (who also stars as the desperate lead) and Fernando Ferro, the micro-feature is produced by Patten’s own TBK Productions in association with Tucci & Company. 

The film features Entourage alum Adrian Grenier in a key supporting role, alongside UFC champion and Olympic gold medalist Henry Cejudo in his acting debut, and House star Odette Annable. After a private Sundance screening and pickup by Inaugural Entertainment for distribution, Self Custody (2026) arrived on Tubi and Plex before landing on Amazon Prime Video—delivering a compact, terrifying yet entertaining tale drawn from real-world stories of lost Bitcoin wallets.

Scott, a family man, finds himself in financial trouble after failing to organize his finances when his family friend and accountant gives him a call. Turns out Scott had gotten a signing bonus from some tech company he worked for in 2014, paid in Bitcoin. Today, presumably well into the 2020’s, that bonus is worth over 14 million dollars. The film follows Scott as he tries to claim this Bitcoin, quickly realizing his self-custody setup was done improperly, and he does not remember the PIN code to the wallet. 

The film is overall negative on self-custody as a practice, presenting the absolute worst-case scenario for a Bitcoin or crypto owner. A series of mistakes, presented as innocent but really born out of a lack of study or knowledge of the technology and industry, led Scott to catastrophic loss, in admittedly a very entertaining and action-packed fashion.
