Bitwise CEO says four-year crypto cycle is dead as institutional era takes hold
Bitwise CEO Hunter Horsley said the four-year crypto market cycle is definitively dead, pointing to last year’s down market as breaking the three-up-one-down pattern that defined the prior era.

Horsley also called Strategy’s Stretch preferred instrument a “juggernaut” in its early innings, predicting the structure will proliferate across the industry within 12 months and push bitcoin into fixed income markets.

Hunter Horsley, Bitwise Asset Management co-founder and CEO, has a message for crypto investors still waiting for the market to bounce back on schedule: stop waiting.

"The four-year cycle is dead," Horsley said at Consensus 2026 in Miami, where he sat for an interview at Solana Accelerate with The Block’s Gareth Jenkinson. "The four-year cycle stipulates that you have three years of up markets and then a year of down markets. Last year was down, so it's over," he said, echoing rhetoric shared by Bitwise CIO Matt Hougan.
Building on the end of crypto’s four-year cycle, the Bitwise exec further pointed to a new industry regime for the growing digital asset sector.

Horsley reached for a Winston Churchill line — one his Bitwise colleagues Teddy Vasara regularly references — to capture this inflection: "This is not the end, it's not the beginning of the end, but it is the end of the beginning."

The patterns and intuitions of the prior era, he said, no longer apply in the new one.

Horsley suggested Morgan Stanley now features more prominently in crypto conversations than firms like Gemini, and that stablecoins, with an aggregate supply of over $300 billion, are attracting as much attention as altcoins.

Nationally chartered U.S. bank SoFi’s relaunched crypto business generated $121.6 million in crypto transaction revenue in the first quarter, its first granular disclosure of the unit’s economics since the bank returned to the cryptocurrency space late last year.

Miami — Aave Labs is set to fundamentally reshape how it assesses and lists collateral assets on its protocol, following the largest DeFi exploit of 2026, and the overhaul could set a new standard across the entire industry.

Linda Jeng, chief legal and policy officer at Aave Labs, said at Consensus Miami 2026 that the protocol's existing risk framework, while robust, had been too narrowly focused on financial risk and volatility.

Going forward, every asset seeking to be listed on Aave will face a broader assessment covering interoperability, cybersecurity vulnerabilities, and the underlying architecture of the asset. She cited rsETH, the restaking token issued by KelpDAO that sat at the center of April's crisis, as the catalyst for the change.

Beyond the new assessment criteria, Jeng announced that Aave would publish a formal playbook for asset issuers — a set of minimum standards that projects must meet before they can list on the protocol. She also said Aave would begin examining systemic interconnections across protocols, moving away from analyzing pools in isolation to understanding how exposure in one corner of DeFi can ripple into another.

"Out of a crisis like this, it ups our standards," she said.

The remarks came as Jeng reflected on a month she described as "two weeks of no sleep." An attacker had exploited KelpDAO's cross-chain bridge, minting 116,500 unbacked rsETH tokens worth roughly $293 million, then depositing them into Aave as collateral to borrow real wrapped ether — leaving the protocol holding hundreds of millions in impaired debt.
