Bitcoin ETFs See $1.63B Outflows as BlackRock Leads Selling Pressure



U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs continued seeing heavy outflows for the straight five days with total withdrawals reaching nearly $1.63 billion. The biggest selling came from BlackRock’s Bitcoin ETF, (IBIT), as institutions continued reducing exposure. Meanwhile Bitcoin price continues to struggle below the $78,000 level.

BlackRock Leads Bitcoin ETF Outflows

On May 21 alone, the Bitcoin ETF saw around $101 million outflow. Meanwhile, over the past few days, BlackRock Bitcoin ETF recorded as outflow of,

$448.4 million in outflows on May 18

$325.6 million on May 19

$61.5 million on May 20

$103.7 million on May 21.

n total, BlackRock has now seen more than $1.15 billion leave its Bitcoin ETF in just four trading days. That represents nearly 75% of all Bitcoin ETF outflows during the recent selloff.

Other Bitcoin ETFs also saw investors pulling money out. ARK Invest’s ARKB lost around $163 million, while Fidelity Investments’ FBTC recorded roughly $114 million in outflows during the same period.

Why Are Investors Selling Bitcoin ETFs?

The recent ETF outflows are mainly linked to growing market uncertainty. Higher inflation data in the U.S. has increased fears that interest rates could stay high for longer. When interest rates rise, investors usually move away from risky assets like crypto.

At the same time, global tensions and weak stock markets have also pushed institutions to reduce risk.

Bitcoin Price Still Holds Above Key Support

Despite the heavy selling from ETFs, Bitcoin prices have not collapsed. As of now BTC continued trading near $77,500 during the latest session, showing that buyers are still active around lower support levels.

Ethereum price pressure builds as retail sentiment weakens Ethereum sentiment has weakened sharply in May as traders react to price pressure, ETF outflows, Foundation exits, and slower network growth.

Santiment said Ethereum has seen a sharp shift in market mood, with its market cap down 11.6% over 15 days. The data platform said $ETH is now at risk of falling below $2,000 for the first time since late March if selling pressure continues.

The report said Ethereum's social dominance rose while price kept falling. That pattern can point to higher attention, but Santiment said the tone of discussion moved toward fear and frustration instead of optimism.

Crypto majors bitcoin and ether ($ETH) head into the weekend having been confined to a tight trading range over the past four days, with $BTC being trapped between $76,100 and $78,000.

The lack of volatility has led to little pockets of the altcoin market benefitting from the speculative nature of crypto investors. The AI sector was the recipient of such speculation on Friday as $NEAR increased by 28.5% while FET posted an 11.4% gain in the past 24 hours.

Conversely, privacy coins DASH, ZEC and XMR experienced a wave of sell pressure on Friday, eroding much of their early week rally, indicating that sector rotation is in full effect.

Brent crude oil dropped to $102 per barrel on Friday, down from $112 seen earlier this week as speculation swirls around a potential peace deal between Iran and the U.S.

U.S. equities responded well to the drop off in oil; Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at a record high on Friday, while Nasdaq 100 and S&P 500 are now up by 3% and 1.7% respectively since Tuesday's low, suggesting a return to risk-on sentiment.

Crypto futures market-wide volume rose modestly by 1% to $160 billion in the last 24 hours, while notional open interest (OI) remained stable near $128 billion. Liquidations declined sharply by 26% to $200 million. This setup reflects a calmer market with reduced forced liquidations, even as volume growth remains relatively muted.

Today's standout token is Near Protocol's $NEAR, which has gained over 25%. With the price rise, OI in futures tied to the token has surged to a record high of 282.53 million tokens. The OI-adjusted 24-hour cumulative volume delta is positive, a sign of aggressive buying at market orders rather than passive limit orders. This validates the upswing in prices. On-chain data shows that certain whale wallets have accumulated $DOGE tokens during the recent price correction. Despite this recent recovery, traders should be cautious, as derivatives metrics indicate mixed sentiment, capping the meme coin’s comeback.Santiment’s Supply Distribution data shows that large-wallet holders (whales) are buying $DOGE during its recent price dips, a move that supports the positive outlook for the token.

The metric indicates that whales holding between 10 million and 100 million $DOGE tokens (blue line) have accumulated a total of 500 million tokens since May 17. During the same period, whales holding 100,000 and 1 million tokens (red line) and holdings between 1 million and 10 million tokens (yellow line) have shed a total of 330 million tokens.

This shows that the second cohort of whales could have fallen prey to the capitulation event. In contrast, the first set of wallets seized the opportunity and accumulated $DOGE at a discount.

In addition, this buy-the-dip scenario signals continued long-term interest among large-wallet holders, which could act as a cushion.

Despite whales accumulating the recent dips, the derivatives metrics show mixed sentiment. CoinGlass’ long-to-short ratio for $DOGE reads 0.94 on Friday, nearing the lowest level over a month. This ratio, being below one, reflects bearish sentiment in the market, as more traders are betting on the asset’s price to fall.

However, the funding rates data for meme coin support improving sentiment. CoinGlass’ OI-Weighted Funding Rate data for $DOGE flipped positive on Monday, reading 0.0082% on Friday. This positive rate indicates that longs are paying shorts and projecting a bullish sentiment.
