SEC Commissioner Hester Peirce Admits: “We Were Wrong About Cryptocurrencies”

SEC member Hester Peirce, also known as “Crypto Mom,” discussed the agency’s past policies regarding crypto assets and the future of the sector in an interview.

Peirce stated that the approach taken during former chairman Gary Gensler’s tenure was “wrong in method, even if the intention was right,” and that this slowed down industry development.

Peirce argued that the SEC has not made sufficient efforts to understand the cryptocurrency world in past years. He stated that the regulator should engage in more dialogue with industry stakeholders before taking action, adding:

“I think we took the wrong approach in the past. While some intentions were good, the execution wasn’t right, and that’s why we wasted time. If we had established a framework from the very beginning, we could be in a much more productive place today.”

Peirce also addressed malicious activity in the crypto market, arguing that it’s important for a regulator to know its limits. He stated that not every issue falls within the SEC’s jurisdiction, saying, “Just because there’s a problem doesn’t necessarily mean it’s ‘my problem.’ Congress doesn’t want us to overstep our jurisdiction.”

Peirce, speaking specifically about “memecoins” and assets that are not considered securities, reminded investors to be cautious.

Peirce issued a clear warning that the SEC’s protective shield would not apply to losses in non-security assets: “I want people to be alert because our regulatory regime isn’t there to support them.”

The BIS General Manager has said that existing stablecoins fall short of the requirements for a widely accepted and used payment instrument.

Stablecoins Remain A “Niche” Payment Instrument
Pablo Hernández de Cos, General Manager at the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), spoke on the topic of stablecoins at a Bank of Japan seminar in Tokyo on Monday. The BIS is an international financial institution that serves as a bank for central banks. It’s owned by constituent central banks, of which there are 63 in total at the moment. The institution has been vocal about its concerns regarding stablecoins in the past.

Stablecoins are cryptocurrencies that have their price tied to a fiat currency. In recent years, these tokens have gained popularity, inviting regulation from major economic hubs.

Since stables run on blockchain technology, they naturally offer relatively cheap 24/7 transactions. This has made their main use, besides being a store of value, as a mode of payments.

Stablecoins try to mimic fiat currencies, but do they count as “money”? de Cos has discussed the two features that decide the “moneyness” of an instrument: singleness and interoperability.

First, singleness is the idea that different forms of money should be perfectly substitutable at par across financial intermediaries and platforms. In fiat economics, this is facilitated by central banks. For the decentralized stablecoins, there is no such central settlement so deviations can emerge.

Though, these differences tend to be relatively modest. “Yet confidence shocks can widen discounts abruptly and, when they do, users may refuse to accept certain stablecoins, as seen on several occasions in the past,” said de Cos.

Building on its US success, crypto exchange Coinbase has rolled out crypto-backed USDC loans for UK residents, using Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) as collateral. This expands the exchange’s growing suite of financial services in the region.

Crypto-Backed Loans Cross The Pond
On Monday, Coinbase, the largest crypto exchange in the US, announced that it has expanded its Borrow product to UK residents, unlocking more liquidity for users without having to sell their crypto holdings.

UK customers can now instantly borrow USDC using their Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Coinbase Wrapped Staked Ether (cbETH) as collateral, powered by Morpho, an on-chain protocol on the Base network.

Notably, Coinbase users will be able to borrow up to $5 million in USDC for Bitcoin-backed loans, depending on the amount of BTC pledged as collateral, the announcement explained.

The crypto exchange stated that collateral will be locked in a Morpho smart contract until the loan is fully repaid, and there is no fixed repayment schedule. However, it will be liquidated to repay the loan if the loan-to-value ratio exceeds a certain threshold, and Morpho will charge a liquidation penalty fee.

According to the Monday announcement, the launch expands access to the exchange’s crypto-backed lending service, which has seen multi-billion-dollar demand since launch in the US last year.

Providing access to crypto-backed loans in the UK is the first step in Coinbase’s ongoing efforts to expand following the launch of this offering in the US in January 2025. Initial interest in the service in the US has been substantial with total loan originations through Coinbase on Morpho growing to over $2.17B USDC as of April 14, 2026. Coinbase plans to continue expanding access to crypto-backed loans in more countries in the near future.
