Iran declares Strait of Hormuz fully open, Bitcoin flirts with $77K

The Strait of Hormuz has been fully reopened to commercial shipping during the ongoing ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, with ships required to follow a designated route established by Iranian authorities, said Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi in a Friday statement.

In line with the ceasefire in Lebanon, the passage for all commercial vessels through Strait of Hormuz is declared completely open for the remaining period of ceasefire, on the coordinated route as already announced by Ports and Maritime Organisation of the Islamic Rep. of Iran.

Bitcoin inched higher toward $77,000 on the news after trading earlier in the $74,600–$75,746 range, while oil prices tumbled. Crude dropped 11.5% to near $84 and Brent declined more than 10% to around $89.


President Donald Trump responded by thanking Iran for the move.

The Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil transportation, witnessed a full closure in early March 2026 as tensions escalated between the US and Iran following military actions initiated by the US. The crisis led to the longest period of oil supply disruptions since the 1973 oil embargo, with prices exceeding record highs and severe impacts on global markets.

The latest development comes shortly after Trump announced a 10-day ceasefire in Lebanon following separate calls with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun.

The truce, which began at midnight, halts seven weeks of intense Israeli military action against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon and is expected to be followed by direct Israeli–Lebanese talks in Washington next week.

He said the standard origin story “makes no sense,” asking why someone would spend years or even decades developing blockchain technology only to release it to the world for free and then disappear.

“So then you have to ask yourself three questions,” Jiang said. “First of all is who would have the technology and the expertise to create something like the blockchain. Second of all, you have to ask who would benefit from this blockchain creation. The third question you want to ask is why would they keep it secret?”

From there, Jiang argued that the likely candidates were US intelligence and defense agencies, citing the role government-linked institutions played in building foundational internet infrastructure. “Probably the same people who created the internet, probably the same people who created GPS, DARPA, NSA, CIA, probably these guys,” he said. The Ministry of Finance and Economy announced on an official press release that the pilot project for the execution of national treasury funds using blockchain‐based digital currency has been approved.

This new official venture marks the second time in which South Korea’s government uses digital currency and deposit tokens for the execution of national treasury funds, following another pilot project for building electric‐vehicle charging facilities and paying national subsidies together with the Ministry of Environment.

Deposit tokens are digital claims on commercial bank deposits, issued on permissioned blockchain rails, spendable by citizens and companies at participating merchants and service providers.

In simpler words, deposit tokens are digital versions of the money already kept in a normal bank account. The bank “wraps” those deposits into tokens on a private (permissioned) blockchain, and you can then spend those tokens at approved shops or service providers, just like using a card or mobile wallet.

In contrast with Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs), that are digital versions of a country’s official money, created and managed directly by its central bank, deposit tokens have programmable settlement, transparent tracking of public money, and real‐time reporting for the state.

Pilot Details
The press release states that under the current National Treasury Funds Management Act, business promotion costs and related operating expenses are required to be paid with government purchase cards, effectively blocking the use of deposit tokens.
