Coinbase AI draws backlash after pushing World Cup result before kickoff.Coinbase (COIN) sent users a false “breaking news” alert saying Norway's soccer team beat Brazil 3-2 in a World Cup knockout match before the game had even started.

The alert said Erling Haaland scored twice in the match at MetLife Stadium. Coinbase’s own prediction-market page still listed the game as weather-delayed at the time.

Users posted screenshots of the notification on X on Sunday. Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong replied to one saying he was looking into it with the team. According to one post, the alert was sent at 10:26 a.m. ET. The match didn't start until 4 p.m.

Max Branzburg, the company's head of consumer & business products, later clarified that the incorrect story was fixed and the firm “made some updates to avoid these types of inaccuracies in the future.”

“It’s awesome to see the power of AI-enabled 24/7 insights for trading, but obviously still need to tune it to address these types of issues,” Branzburg wrote on X.

The actual match did see Norway beat Brazil, and Haaland scored twice. The final score was 2-1.

The error landed as Coinbase pushes deeper into prediction markets. The company rolled out prediction markets to U.S. users in January through Kalshi, offering contracts tied to sports, elections, economic data and other real-world events.

One move I'm watching today is the sharp decline in spot gold, which has fallen more than 1% intraday.
At first glance, the pullback may look significant, but I think it's more important to understand what's driving it. Gold remains highly sensitive to changes in U.S. dollar strength, Treasury yields, and expectations around Federal Reserve policy.
When markets begin pricing in higher interest rates or a stronger dollar, non-yielding assets like gold often come under pressure. On the other hand, any shift toward rate cuts or rising geopolitical uncertainty could quickly revive demand for safe-haven assets.
For me, a single day's price movement doesn't change the broader macro story.
I'll continue watching upcoming economic data and Fed signals, because they are likely to have a much greater impact on gold's medium-term direction than short-term market volatility.

The latest purchase, worth roughly $74 million based on ether's current price of around $1,750, lifted the company's holdings to 5.74 million $ETH, according to a Monday update. The stash is now worth about $10 billion and represents 4.8% of Ethereum's circulating supply, inching closer to the firm's goal of cornering 5% of the asset's supply.

The company also held 206 bitcoin, $527 million in cash and marketable securities, plus stakes in Beast Industries and Eightco Holdings, bringing its total crypto, cash and investment holdings to $11.1 billion.

The acquisition marks an increase from the prior week's purchase of 27,084 $ETH, though it remains below the six-figure weekly buying pace BitMine maintained earlier this year.

Bitmine's continued buying contrasts with a shift at Strategy (MSTR), the largest digital asset treasury and corporate bitcoin holder, which sold about $216 million worth of $BTC to raise cash. The sale marked a rare reduction in Strategy's bitcoin holdings and underscored the funding pressures the company faces amid the crypto market downturn and increased dividend obligations.

The sale comes a week after Strategy introduced its Digital Credit Capital Framework. The latest transaction reduced Strategy’s holdings to 843,775 BTC, according to Executive Chairman Michael Saylor.

Strategy puts new Bitcoin monetization policy into action
In a post on X on Monday, July 6, Saylor said the company sold 3,588 BTC to fund dividends on its Digital Credit securities. Following the transaction, Strategy held 843,775 BTC alongside $2.55 billion in U.S. dollar reserves.

The update marks a notable shift from the company’s previous reporting cycle. In its 29 June Form 8-K, Strategy disclosed that it had made no Bitcoin purchases during the week ended 28 June and still held 847,363 BTC. The filing also unveiled a new treasury framework that authorized Bitcoin sales under defined circumstances.

That framework allows Strategy to sell Bitcoin to build its USD Reserve, pay preferred stock dividends, and interest expenses. Also, it allows it to fund repurchases of preferred securities and Class A common stock.

However, the filing also made clear that the program does not obligate the company to sell Bitcoin and is intended to preserve its long-term exposure to the asset.
