Crypto critic Roubini joins tokenization boom with onchain 'Technodollar'Nouriel Roubini, the economist known as "Dr. Doom" for predicting the 2008 financial crisis and who later became one of crypto's most vocal critics, is making his first move into blockchain-based finance.

Roubini co-authored a whitepaper for USAFi, a tokenized investment product being developed by Atlas Capital Team, according to a Tuesday announcement.

USAFi is the tokenized version of the Atlas America Fund (USAF), an ETF overseen by Roubini and listed on Nasdaq. Atlas described the token as a blockchain-based security that gives investors exposure to the underlying fund while allowing it to move and settle on blockchain rails.

The company plans to launch the asset in the third quarter under Dubai's Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA) framework, the firm said.

Securitize, one of the largest tokenization platforms, said in an X post that it was selected to provide the tokenization infrastructure for the project, calling it Roubini's "first move into blockchain."

The launch is the latest example of tokenization, a fast-growing sector that puts traditional assets such as funds, bonds and stocks on blockchain networks. Supporters argue the technology can make assets easier to transfer and settle, reach a wider set of investors globally while enabling around-the-clock trading.

Crypto PAC's $5.5 million Congress pick gets Maryland win, more crypto allies advanceThe leading crypto political action committee, Fairshake, often backs its favored hopefuls for the U.S. House of Representatives with ad campaigns in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, but it devoted Senate-level money - some e $5.5 million - to Adrian Boafo, a Democrat who just won his party's nomination for a Maryland seat on Tuesday.

The state delegate's dominant victory records another success for the industry's super PAC and its affiliates after having notched a big primary election win with its $12 million devoted to Barry Moore's Alabama Senate bid last week.

Boafo's campaign website says he's looking to "provide responsible regulatory clarity for innovators building the next generation of financial tools, though it also included consumer-protection language often associated with crypto-resistance Democrats. Still, he has a record of pro-crypto legislative efforts in his state and favorably completed advocacy group Stand With Crypto's political questionnaire to earn that group's "A" rating.

The industry's support didn't go unnoticed. The open seat drew a massive number of Democratic candidates to replace outgoing Rep. Steny Hoyer, and Maryland's U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen bashed the "obscene amount of big special-interest money" Boafo received in the race.

Services PMI as a Policy Barometer

The Services PMI is a critical gauge of economic health in the services sector, which accounts for a significant majority of economic activity in both the eurozone and the US. For the eurozone, a stronger-than-expected reading could reinforce the ECB’s cautious approach to further rate cuts, providing support for the euro. Conversely, a weak US Services PMI might fuel expectations of a more dovish Fed, potentially weighing on the dollar.

Commerzbank strategists emphasize that the market’s focus on services data reflects a broader reassessment of growth differentials. While the manufacturing sector has shown signs of stabilization, services activity remains the primary driver of inflation and employment trends in both regions.

MiniPay launches Visa debit card for stablecoin spending MiniPay has launched a Visa debit card that allows users in selected markets across Africa, Latin America, Southeast Asia and Europe to make purchases using stablecoins.

According to Tuesday's announcement, the card is powered by Gnosis Pay's infrastructure, enabling users to pay directly from their MiniPay wallets while merchants receive local currency through Visa's network.

MiniPay said it has grown to more than 16 million activated wallets across 65 countries since launching in 2023, with much of its adoption concentrated in Africa and other emerging markets.

The card can be added to Apple Pay and Google Pay, while eligible users in some markets will receive cashback rewards denominated in stablecoins USDt and $USDC, as well as Tether Gold.

MiniPay is a stablecoin wallet owned by Opera, the Nasdaq-listed software company best known for its web browser. Built on the Celo blockchain, the wallet focuses on payments, transfers and savings using dollar-backed stablecoins.

Ric Edelman predicts CLARITY Act may unlock crypto floodgatesRic Edelman has predicted that up to 95% of institutions without crypto exposure could enter the market if the CLARITY Act becomes law.

In a recent interview, Edelman said the disconnect between crypto prices and industry activity has become increasingly noticeable as large financial firms continue expanding their blockchain and tokenization efforts.

While cryptocurrency markets have struggled to maintain momentum amid regulatory uncertainty, Edelman said major Wall Street institutions, including BlackRock, JPMorgan, Morgan Stanley, Franklin Templeton, State Street, Invesco, and Fidelity, continue building products and services tied to digital assets.

“Crypto prices are not reflecting what’s happening in the world of crypto,” Edelman said, pointing to rising institutional engagement even as investors remain cautious.

Institutional demand continues to build
Drawing attention to recent industry surveys and conversations with market participants, Edelman said many institutions that currently have no crypto exposure are preparing to enter the sector.

According to Edelman, 95% of institutions that do not currently own crypto expect to make their first allocation this year. He added that roughly three-quarters of institutions that already hold digital assets intend to increase their existing exposure.

Even with those expectations, capital has not yet entered the market at the scale many industry participants anticipated. Edelman attributed part of that hesitation to uncertainty surrounding U.S. crypto legislation, periodic Bitcoin ETF outflows, and continued political opposition from lawmakers such as Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren.
