The total value locked on decentralized lending platform Aave is plunging after hackers exploited KelpDAO’s cross-chain rsETH configuration, with LayerZero saying preliminary indicators point to North Korea’s Lazarus Group.LayerZero says KelpDAO was exploited for about $290 million on April 18 and describes the attacker as a “highly-sophisticated state actor,” likely tied to Lazarus Group and its TraderTraitor unit.In a statement, LayerZero says the incident was limited to KelpDAO’s rsETH setup and did not spread to other assets or applications using the protocol.According to blockchain tracker LookonChain, the exploit led to roughly $292 million worth of rsETH being minted illegitimately. The attacker then used the token as collateral to borrow more than 82,600 Ether (ETH), worth about $195 million, from Aave.LookonChain says the bad debt triggered large withdrawals from Aave, causing its TVL to fall by $6.28 billion in less than 48 hours, from $26.396 billion to $20.114 billion.It says major withdrawals include $431 million from MEXC, $405.7 million from wallet 0x7CD0, possibly linked to Nonco, and $392 million from Abraxas Capital.LayerZero says the attack targeted downstream RPC infrastructure used by its Decentralized Verifier Network rather than exploiting the LayerZero protocol itself, adding that compromised nodes had been replaced and the verifier network was back online.Aave moved to freeze rsETH markets on V3 and V4 to prevent additional borrowing and deposits while it evaluates options to cover any deficit.Generated Image: Midjourney

The firm bought 34,164 BTC for $2.54 billion, which makes it its third-largest weekly purchase on record.

Arbitrum freezes $71 million worth of ETH stolen in Kelp DAO exploit

The Arbitrum Security Council has frozen 30,766 ETH held in an address on Arbitrum One linked to the Kelp DAO exploit.

Arbitrum said the frozen funds will only be moved by further action through Arbitrum governance.
The Arbitrum Security Council has frozen 30,766 ETH, worth about $71.1 million, held in an address on Arbitrum One linked to the $292 million Kelp DAO exploit over the weekend.

In a Tuesday post on X, Arbitrum said the security council has moved the funds to an intermediary frozen wallet, adding that the action did not affect other chain state and Arbitrum users.

The funds will remain frozen unless further action is approved through Arbitrum governance, the team said.

"The Security Council acted with input from law enforcement as to the exploiter's identity, and, at all times, weighed its commitment to the security and integrity of the Arbitrum community without impacting any Arbitrum users or applications," said the statement. The Block reached out to Arbitrum for further information.

The move follows a major exploit on Saturday involving Kelp DAO, a LayerZero-powered cross-chain bridge, which resulted in the loss of 116,500 rsETH tokens worth roughly $292 million.

Preliminary findings from LayerZero suggested that the attack was likely linked to North Korean hacking group Lazarus.
LayerZero has also criticized Kelp DAO's use of a 1-of-1 decentralized verified network (DVN) configuration, arguing that it introduced a single point of failure by lacking independent verification to detect a fraudulent cross-chain message. 

Kelp DAO pushed back on the statement, saying that the 1-of-1 DVN setup was shipped as the default configuration at LayerZero.
