Here's how bitcoin's $7.9 billion April options expiry impact prices


Bitcoin options worth roughly $7.9 billion are set to expire on Deribit this Friday, with positioning data pointing to $62,000 and $75,000 as key levels to watch out for.

The $75,000 level is where most trading in call options, which represent bullish bets, has happened, according to data source Glassnode. Around $395 million in call open interest is concentrated at the $75,000 strike as of writing. That figure represents the dollar value of the number of active call options contracts today.

More importantly, “gamma exposure” is deeply negative at the 75,000 strike – it means dealers’ hedging flows are likely to amplify price movements around this level. As the price rises, they may need to buy more, and as it falls, sell more, reinforcing the direction of the move.

As a result, the 75,000 level can act as a zone of heightened volatility, where price swings become sharper rather than stabilizing.

Options are derivative contracts that give the buyer the right to buy or sell the underlying asset, in this case, BTC, at a predetermined price at a later date. A call option gives the right to buy and a put option gives the right to sell.

It's like paying a booking fee to reserve a right to transact a house at today’s price – you have the right to buy or sell it later at that price, but you’re not obligated to go through with the transaction if the market price moves against you.


On the downside, the largest concentration of put open interest sits at $62,000, with roughly $330 million in contracts, marking the main zone of downside protection.

Expert Analyst Delves Deep into Bitcoin: “Both Rises and Falls Aren’t What They Used to Be!”

Although the price of Bitcoin ($BTC) increases numerically in each cycle, its actual upward momentum and potential are decreasing.

Galaxy Digital research head Alex Thorn argues that the current Bitcoin market cycle is dramatically weaker compared to the previous three cycles.

At this point, Thorn compared the price movements since the Bitcoin halving in April 2024 to the 2012, 2016, and 2020 cycles.

The study concluded that volatility has significantly decreased in the current cycle and the upside potential is lower.

Although Bitcoin reached its all-time high of over $125,000 on October 5, 2025, it only managed to surpass 97% of its 2024 halving price of approximately $63,000. According to the analyst, this indicates that the peak of the cycle so far has been significantly calmer compared to other cycles.

This increase is quite small compared to other cycles. According to historical data, in the 2012 halving cycle, the $BTC price increased by approximately 9,294%, rising to $1,163. In 2016, it approached $19,891 with an increase of approximately 2,950%, and finally, in the 2020 cycle, a gain of approximately 761% was observed.

According to the analyst, the decreasing volatility with each new $BTC halving cycle indicates that traditional market dynamics are changing and that the price is becoming more influenced by factors other than the four-year halving cycle theory.

While bull cycles in Bitcoin are becoming less frequent, Fidelity analysts also note that with decreasing volatility, Bitcoin declines are becoming less severe.

That transaction pushed Strategy’s total holdings to 780,897 BTC, valued at more than $59 billion. The company remains the largest corporate holder of Bitcoin globally, and its pace of accumulation has made its weekly filings a closely watched event across the market.
