Negative Funding Rates Hit Yearly High as Bitcoin Tests $76K

Bitcoin funding rates hit year-high negative levels, setting up a potential short squeeze—or bull trap—as its price tests $76K.
Bitcoin’s recent rally toward $76,000 faces a dilemma, leaving investors split on its near-term outlook.

Funding rates for Bitcoin—a fee paid by derivatives traders to maintain the alignment between spot and futures prices—have remained negative for over a month and hit the highest level this year, according to Coinglass data.

Negative funding rates indicate investors are shorting the recent rally with the expectation of a reversal.

The divergence between bearish derivatives positioning and bullish spot catalysts sets up a potential short squeeze—or a bull trap—depending on which side breaks first.

“Funding rates this negative tell you the market is heavily short,” Daniel Reis-Faria, CEO of ZeroStack, told Decrypt.

The derivatives data directly contrasts with Bitcoin's recent uptick, which was in part driven by bullish catalysts such as sustained ETF inflows, regulatory development surrounding the CLARITY Act, and the two-week ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran, Decrypt previously reported.

“For a squeeze to gain real momentum, Bitcoin would need to break and hold above $80,000,” Illia Otychenko, lead analyst at crypto exchange CEX.IO, told Decrypt.

Such a move could trigger “cascading liquidations of short positions and accelerate the rally,” Otychenko said.

Reis-Faria’s bullish forecast involves Bitcoin pushing close to “$125,000 in the next 30 to 60 days,” adding that a short squeeze would help this case.

Bitcoin is currently trading at around $75,580, up 1.2% in the past 24 hours after having reached an intraday high of $76,114, according to CoinGecko data.

Looking back, SHIB gained global attention after its explosive rise following its launch in August 2020, eventually reaching an all-time high of $0.00008616 in October 2021. However, it has struggled to replicate that momentum in subsequent cycles.
As a meme coin, SHIB carries significantly higher risk compared to major assets like Bitcoin and Ethereum. In 2025, rising macroeconomic uncertainty and geopolitical tensions pushed markets into a risk-off environment, with meme coins among the hardest hit.
Despite the weakness, some analysts argue that crypto markets operate in cycles. Potential catalysts such as Federal Reserve interest rate cuts, improving global liquidity conditions, or easing geopolitical tensions could eventually support a broader recovery in risk assets, including meme coins like SHIB.
However, for now, conditions remain uncertain. While late-2026 or 2027 is sometimes mentioned as a possible recovery window, any meaningful rebound is likely to depend on broader macro improvements rather than SHIB-specific developments.
Overall, SHIB remains highly sensitive to market sentiment, and its next major move will likely be shaped by macro cycles rather than short-term hype.

Stellar ($XLM) price trades slightly down at $0.167 on Friday, after breaking above the descending trendline and rallying over 10% so far this week. The bullish sentiment builds as $XLM’s network transactions reach a quarterly high, alongside positive funding rates and bullish momentum indicators.

Chainspect, a blockchain fundamentals tracker, data shows that Stellar processed over 14.19 million transactions on Thursday, its highest level in the past quarter. These surging transactions highlight increased interest and liquidity among traders in the $XLM, supporting a bullish outlook.

On the derivative side, $XLM funding rates have also flipped positive on Monday and read at 0.011% on Friday, indicating the longs are paying the shorts. Historically, when funding rates have turned positive and surged, $XLM price has rallied sharply.

$XLM Price Forecast: Price action shows a bullish breakout in play

Stellar price is trading at $0.166 on Friday, after breaking above the descending trendline at $0.1580 the previous day. $XLM is maintaining a corrective tone below the medium- and long-term Exponential Moving Averages (EMAs) as the current price remains capped beneath the 100-day EMA at $0.180 and well under the 200-day EMA at $0.215.

The 50-day EMA at $0.164 now offers nearby dynamic support, while the Relative Strength Index (RSI) around 55 and a slightly positive Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) histogram hint that downside momentum has faded but not yet flipped the structure.
