Stablecoin war erupts as Circle fails to freeze hacked Drift funds: What's going on?

Solana’s stablecoin usage across its DeFi ecosystem could be gearing up for a structural change as Tether openly challenges Circle’s USDC dominance. 

The catalyst? Circle’s inaction in freezing the $285 million in stolen funds from the Solana-based Drift decentralized protocol. 

While most of the funds, $232 million, were in USDC, Circle failed to freeze the funds, sparking backlash. 

Now, Drift’s $150 million recovery plan is mostly backed by Tether. Additionally, the protocol will ditch USDC for USDT. 

Interestingly, Solana’s leadership is backing the move. Lily Liu, president of Solana Foundation, hailed USDT as the “original and most liquid stablecoin.”

Clarity Act's stablecoin yield language pushed back; ban on idle balances still intact The anticipated release of the latest language on stablecoin rewards in the Clarity Act has been pushed back.

A source familiar with the discussions told The Block that the latest text reflects previous language that bans rewards on idle stablecoin holdings.

The anticipated release of the Clarity Act's latest text on stablecoin yield appears to have been pushed back to next week and beyond.

According to a Politico report, Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) said the draft will likely not be released this week, saying that he wants clarity on the timing of the upcoming Banking Committee markup before publishing the text to the public.

A source familiar with the matter also told The Block that the text won't be released this week, and that the legislative team continues to meet with bank trade associations and crypto companies.

The source also confirmed that the draft currently reflects prior language that would ban rewards on idle stablecoin holdings in accounts, while allowing yield on activity like transactions. It would be difficult to make substantive changes to the text at this point, according to the source.

Согласно данным Onchain, правительство США перевело на Coinbase биткоины на сумму 606 000 долларов США, связанные со взломом Bitfinex в 2016 году.
