Solana's quantum-threat readiness reveals harsh tradeoff: security vs speed


Crypto has spent years obsessing over speed, fees and scalability. Now it may have to confront a more existential question: what happens when its core security breaks?

That question is moving from theory to urgency. Quantum computers, machines that use the principles of quantum physics to process information in fundamentally different ways than today’s computers, could eventually solve the kinds of mathematical problems that underpin modern encryption.

Discussions around post-quantum cryptography have intensified across the industry in recent weeks, especially after new research from Google and academic collaborators suggested that such systems could one day break widely used encryption, potentially cracking systems like Bitcoin’s in minutes rather than years.

While Bitcoin developers scramble to find a solution and Ethereum prepares for the event, Solana is trying to get ahead of that scenario.

Cryptography firm Project Eleven has teamed up with the Solana Foundation to experiment with post-quantum security, technology designed to withstand quantum attacks that could render today’s cryptography obsolete. The early work is already surfacing a difficult reality: making Solana quantum-safe may come at the expense of the performance that defines it.

In practice, that effort has meant moving beyond theory and into live testing. Project Eleven has worked with the Solana ecosystem to model how the network would behave if its current cryptography were replaced, including deploying a test environment using quantum-resistant signatures — the digital keys that authorize transactions. The goal is not just to prove the technology works, but to understand what breaks when it’s pushed to scale.

What Is Canton Network and Why Does It Matter?

Canton Network is a public, permissionless blockchain co-created by Digital Asset. Its core selling point is built-in privacy, which is configurable and directly addresses the concerns traditional finance has with public blockchains: transaction visibility, compliance risks, and data leaks. The network enables interoperability and 24/7 atomic settlement while keeping sensitive data where it needs to stay.

Its participant list already reads like a Wall Street directory. DTCC, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan (via Kinexys), HSBC, and BNP Paribas are among the institutions already active on the network.

Super Validators sit at the top of the network's trust hierarchy. There are over 40 of them as of early April 2026, each validating transactions, securing the chain, and contributing to governance with assigned voting weight (typically 10 or 5). The broader network now has over 800 validators total. The native token is $CC, with daily fee burns through the Global Synchronizer recently running between $2.5 million and $3 million.

Technically, the market is officially entering the second quarter. However, to understand where it's headed, we need to look back. The first quarter ended with a nearly 21% drop in total crypto market capitalization, continuing the losses of Q4 2025, when the decline was nearly 24%.

In just six months, cryptocurrencies have technically lost over $1.5 trillion. Bitcoin (BTC) also suffered losses, accounting for 60% of these outflows—a sign that it's lagging behind other volatile assets. Confirming this, the XAU/BTC ratio ended the first quarter with a nearly 40% gain, highlighting BTC's relative weakness against gold.

 In short, despite recent optimism about Bitcoin's "relative" resilience, the first quarter showed cryptocurrencies still underperforming across all asset classes. Against this backdrop, US President Donald Trump's recent tweet came at a critical moment.

In it, President Trump warned of a potentially serious attack on Iranian infrastructure, putting aside expectations for a ceasefire. However, it was the timing of the tweet, more than the content, that sparked market excitement.
