Chief Economist Says the Fed May Raise Interest Rates Due to a Serious Risk of Stagflation in the U.S. – What Is Stagflation?



As the global economy faces the risk of renewed stagflation due to rising geopolitical tensions, auditing and consulting firm KPMG has issued a striking warning.

Diane Swonk, the company’s chief economist, stated that the war with Iran, in particular, has severely disrupted economic balances and could force central banks to take unexpected steps.

According to Swonk, the risk of stagflation is becoming increasingly pronounced when rising global energy prices and economic slowdown are considered together. Stagflation is a situation where high inflation and weak economic growth occur simultaneously, presenting an extremely difficult scenario for policymakers to resolve. Swonk warned that if this process cannot be brought under control, the US economy could be dragged into a “deep recession.”

Swonk noted that the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, in particular, led to a sharp rise in oil prices, adding that the developments went far beyond a classic oil shock. He stated that rising energy costs increased production and logistics expenses, creating persistent pressure on overall price levels, and that companies significantly reduced hiring in this environment.

The combination of all these developments is causing both high inflation and weakening economic growth, and investors appear to share similar concerns. In his assessment of the current situation, Swonk stated that the Fed may be forced to raise interest rates in the second half of the year. He added that this step might not be limited to the US alone, and that other major central banks could similarly adopt tightening policies.

ATOM, the native token of Cosmos, might be close to ending its prolonged bearish trend, one it has followed since 18 February 2025. In fact, thanks to a 5.25% price hike over the last 24 hours, ATOM broke out of a narrow range, opening the door for a massive move on the charts.

ATOM’s trading volume surged notably by 13.22% over the same period too. This suggested that market participants may be showing greater interest in ATOM’s prevailing market trend.

Data further revealed that following its most recent gains ATOM officially outperformed major cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), XRP, and Solana (SOL) over the aforementioned period.

Is another potential 15% jump in the offing?

On the daily chart, the near-term bias for ATOM appeared bullish at press time. Especially after it broke out of a falling wedge pattern with a large green engulfing candle.

However, the price still needs to close a daily candle above the pattern to confirm the breakout. Otherwise, it may turn out to be a fakeout instead.

If ATOM closes its daily candle above the $1.77-level, it could see a price jump of over 15% and may reach the next resistance at $1.98. A breakout above this resistance could trigger another 20% rally, potentially pushing the price towards the $2.40-level.

However, this bullish thesis could be invalidated if ATOM’s price fails to close a daily candle above the $1.77-level.

At the time of writing, the technical indicator Average Directional Index (ADX) had fallen to 16.16, below the key threshold of 25. This hinted at weak momentum accompanying ATOM’s price.

Washington has started selecting which crypto firms control custody at a national level

A fast cluster of OCC approvals suggests the US is formalizing who controls custody, settlement, and stablecoin infrastructure.
On Apr. 2, Coinbase received conditional approval from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency for a national trust charter.

Coinbase joined a cluster of at least eight firms that the OCC has moved toward federal trust-charter status since December 2025, and the cluster reveals a deliberate federal decision about which parts of crypto belong inside the supervised system.

The OCC conditionally approved Circle, Ripple, BitGo, Fidelity, and Paxos on Dec. 12, 2025. Bridge followed in February, Crypto.com in February, and Coinbase in April.

Eight approvals in roughly four months, all clustered around custody, reserve management, stablecoin infrastructure, and settlement. That density reframes the Coinbase headline as a data point in a federal design decision.

A national trust charter gives firms federal reach under a single OCC supervisor, allowing them to operate across all 50 states without having to assemble a patchwork of state approvals.

National trust banks hold client assets and facilitate settlement under a fiduciary mandate, operating within a purpose-built custody-and-settlement structure. The lane's practical value lies in scope and supervisory clarity: firms can hold client assets and handle settlement functions under a single federal framework.

Paxos explicitly framed its national trust push as a move beyond its New York state trust structure, and that framing reveals an architectural logic.
