Bitcoin tumbled back below $80,000 late Thursday after the U.S. launched fresh airstrikes in Iran, causing brent crude oil to briefly top $100 per barrel before giving back a portion of gains during Asia and European hours.

The crypto market was already slightly jittery after Strategy chairman Michael Saylor said that the company would consider selling bitcoin to cover dividend payments from its STRC, a u-turn from its previous "never sell" strategy.

Ether (ETH) is trading at $2,280 having lost 0.2% since midnight UTC and around 2% over the past 24 hours, with other altcoins like monero (XMR) and dash (DASH) losing between 4% and 5%.

The broader crypto recovery remains intact with bitcoin having rallied from $65,000 in late March, although it's worth noting that a drop below $75,000 would negate the recent string of higher lows and would signal a reversion to the pervious trading range.

Industry sources who reviewed the draft described the overall response as positive, though unresolved bracketed sections remain a concern. Those areas involve provisions some participants had previously viewed as settled. The draft circulation comes as lawmakers, crypto advocates, and industry executives push for a federal digital asset framework. Terrett said:

“The Senate Banking Committee is preparing to notice a markup for the CLARITY Act as soon as tomorrow and has circulated draft legislative text to select industry members ahead of a potential Thursday vote.”

After passing the House in July 2025, the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act has faced months of Senate Banking Committee deadlock. Pressure increased this week after Patrick Witt, executive director of the President’s Council of Advisors for Digital Assets, said the White House wants passage by July 4. The target adds urgency before election-year politics slow legislative action.

On April 30, Vitalik made a tiny on-chain swap — exchanging about $3.86 worth of XDB for roughly $4.56 in ETH. It seemed insignificant, almost symbolic.
But an automated MEV bot named “jaredfromsubway” saw the transaction and acted instantly.
The bot executed a classic sandwich attack:
• It placed a trade before Vitalik’s swap
• Let his transaction go through at a worse price
• Then executed another trade after to profit from the price movement
This is one of the most well-known MEV strategies on Ethereum — where bots exploit transaction ordering to extract value from users.
In this case, the irony is striking.
The bot reportedly deployed around $1.14 million in WETH to manipulate liquidity, but after gas costs, it may have actually lost money. So the profit was questionable — but the behavior was very real.
And that’s the bigger story.
Even extremely small transactions are constantly being scanned, analyzed, and targeted by automated MEV systems in real time.
This incident also brings renewed attention to a long-running Ethereum debate: how to reduce “toxic MEV.”
Vitalik Buterin has previously supported solutions such as encrypted mempools and improved transaction ordering systems to reduce front-running and sandwich attacks.
MEV (Maximal Extractable Value) itself is not new — but its scale and automation are growing fast. Some bots have previously consumed massive amounts of Ethereum’s gas fees and dominated network activity.
