Blume rejects DeFi structures for crypto lending


Bitcoin lenders at Consensus Miami 2026 said crypto lending must look and feel more like traditional banking if it wants institutional capital to keep flowing in.

Bitcoin lenders at Consensus Miami 2026 argued that the future of crypto lending does not lie in making finance more decentralized. It lies in convincing institutional borrowers that bitcoin-backed credit can behave predictably enough to resemble the system they already trust.

Alexander Blume, founder and CEO of Two Prime, said institutional borrowers often reject crypto-native structures not because they oppose bitcoin, but because the operational complexity surrounding DeFi is difficult to justify to boards, risk committees, and shareholders.

“The moment you start trying to explain how any of this stuff works, they’re just like, No… We’ll pay more. Don’t lose my money,” Blume said, capturing the divide between crypto-native structures and institutional risk tolerance. He distilled the gap into a single observation:

“Our whole financial system is set up to have someone else to blame,” arguing that institutions still prefer identifiable intermediaries and standardized processes over fully autonomous financial systems.

Ledn CEO Adam Reeds said the most important question a borrower should ask is “where is your Bitcoin stored.” Lygos CEO Jay Patel added that borrowers now need to “underwrite the lender” before entering any bitcoin-backed credit arrangement.

The panel placed particular weight on rehypothecation, the practice of relending pledged collateral, which Patel called “the biggest point in my mind” and a key driver of the 2022 lending crisis that took down Celsius, Voyager, and BlockFi.

European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde has intensified her opposition to euro-denominated stablecoins, warning that the risks to financial stability and monetary control outweigh any benefit to the euro’s international role.

Speaking Friday at the Banco de Espana LatAm Economic Forum in Spain, Lagarde argued that Europe does not need to replicate the stablecoin models that have emerged around the U.S. dollar. She said the technological benefits tied to blockchain-based payments can instead be delivered through public infrastructure supported by central bank money.

“The case for promoting euro-denominated stablecoins is far weaker than it appears,” Lagarde said during the event.

Her remarks targeted growing calls within Europe to develop a local stablecoin ecosystem under the EU’s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation framework. Bundesbank President Joachim Nagel publicly supported that idea earlier this year, while several European banks and payment firms have already started preparing regulated products.

Lagarde separated what she described as the monetary role of stablecoins from their technological use. According to the ECB president, reserve-currency expansion tied to privately issued tokens creates vulnerabilities that Europe’s financial system cannot easily absorb.

She pointed to risks tied to bank runs, de-pegging events, and deposit migration away from commercial banks, citing the instability that followed the 2023 Silicon Valley Bank collapse and Circle’s USDC disruption. In a bank-dependent economy such as the euro area, Lagarde argued that large-scale movement of deposits into stablecoins could weaken lending capacity and complicate monetary-policy transmission.

Fund managers double down on Bitcoin as crypto sentiment rebounds - CoinShares

Fund managers are warming back up to digital assets, with Bitcoin continuing to dominate allocation preferences even as broader crypto sentiment improves, according to a new survey by CoinShares.

The April survey gathered responses from 26 institutional investors overseeing a combined $1.3 trillion in assets under management. Allocations to digital assets remain relatively modest, at around 1%, reflecting what CoinShares described as "typical entry sizing" in the current de-risking environment.

"Bitcoin remains the digital asset with the most

compelling growth outlook," CoinShares head of research James Butterfill wrote in the report. Sentiment toward Ether (ETH) and Solana (SOL) also improved modestly compared with previous quarters.

The leading cryptocurrency, Bitcoin ($BTC), surged above $82,000 on news of a possible deal between the US and Iran, coupled with institutional support. However, new developments regarding the conflict in the Middle East pushed $BTC back below $80,000.

However, this recent downturn did not affect the options market, and it entered an upward trend.

Accordingly, options investors are targeting $115,000 for Bitcoin by the end of the year.

According to the data, the number of investors betting that Bitcoin will rise above $115,000 by the end of 2026 in the options market is steadily increasing.

The 33% price increase since the annual low of $60,130 on February 6th is playing a significant role in increasing bullish expectations.

It is estimated that there is approximately $6 billion in open positions in Bitcoin options that expire on December 25th.

A significant portion of this consists of call option bets on the Bitcoin price rising above $115,000. Open positions for $115,000 and above are approximately $1.85 billion.

However, at prices of $55,000 and below, there is a $1 billion put option, a figure that is also noteworthy.

This means that options traders are betting on extreme price expectations in both bullish and bearish markets. If the bulls appear overly optimistic, those taking short positions appear equally overly pessimistic.
